| I can ping IP addresses, but not hostnames. I'm using the DNS servers given by our network admin. It was like pulling teeth to get them to give me the IPs because "everything is server assigned." Here's the output of the various config commands. Any help would be appreciated. dmesg: OpenBSD 3.3 (GENERIC) #44: Sat Mar 29 13:22:05 MST 2003 deraadt@i386.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC cpu0: AMD Duron Model 3 (Spitfire) ("AuthenticAMD" 686-class) 831 MHz cpu0: FPU,V86,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,PAE,MCE,CX8,SYS,MTRR,PGE,MC A,CMOV,PAT,PSE36,MMX,FXSR real mem = 402157568 (392732K) avail mem = 366829568 (358232K) using 4278 buffers containing 20209664 bytes (19736K) of memory mainbus0 (root) bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+(5b) BIOS, date 10/19/01, BIOS32 rev. 0 @ 0xf0f70 apm0 at bios0: Power Management spec V1.2 apm0: AC on, battery charge unknown pcibios0 at bios0: rev. 2.1 @ 0xf0000/0x1842 pcibios0: PCI IRQ Routing Table rev. 1.0 @ 0xf1770/208 (11 entries) pcibios0: PCI Interrupt Router at 000:07:0 ("Acer Labs M1543 PCI-ISA" rev 0x00) pcibios0: PCI bus #1 is the last bus bios0: ROM list: 0xc0000/0xa000 0xcc000/0x4000! pci0 at mainbus0 bus 0: configuration mode 1 (no bios) pchb0 at pci0 dev 0 function 0 "Acer Labs M1647 PCI" rev 0xb0 ppb0 at pci0 dev 1 function 0 "Acer Labs M5247 AGP/PCI-PCI" rev 0x00 pci1 at ppb0 bus 1 vga1 at pci1 dev 0 function 0 "3DFX Interactive Voodoo3" rev 0x01 wsdisplay0 at vga1: console (80x25, vt100 emulation) wsdisplay0: screen 1-5 added (80x25, vt100 emulation) ohci0 at pci0 dev 2 function 0 "Acer Labs M5237 USB" rev 0x03: irq 9, OHCI version 1.0, legacy support usb0 at ohci0: USB revision 1.0 uhub0 at usb0 uhub0: vendor 0x0000 OHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1 uhub0: 4 ports with 4 removable, self powered pciide0 at pci0 dev 4 function 0 "Acer Labs M5229 UDMA IDE" rev 0xc4: DMA, channel 0 configured to compatibility, channel 1 configured to compatibility wd0 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 0: <MAXTOR 6L080L4> wd0: 16-sector PIO, LBA, 76345MB, 16383 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, 156355584 sectors wd1 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 1: <Maxtor 92048U8> wd1: 16-sector PIO, LBA, 19531MB, 16383 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, 40000464 sectors wd0(pciide0:0:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 5 wd1(pciide0:0:1): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 4 atapiscsi0 at pciide0 channel 1 drive 0 scsibus0 at atapiscsi0: 2 targets cd0 at scsibus0 targ 0 lun 0: <CREATIVE, DVD-ROM DVD2240E, 1.7A> SCSI0 5/cdrom removable atapiscsi1 at pciide0 channel 1 drive 1 scsibus1 at atapiscsi1: 2 targets cd1 at scsibus1 targ 0 lun 0: <LITE-ON, LTR-16101B, TS0N> SCSI0 5/cdrom removable cd0(pciide0:1:0): using PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2 cd1(pciide0:1:1): using PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2 ohci1 at pci0 dev 6 function 0 "Acer Labs M5237 USB" rev 0x03: irq 9, OHCI version 1.0, legacy support usb1 at ohci1: USB revision 1.0 uhub1 at usb1 uhub1: vendor 0x0000 OHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1 uhub1: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered pcib0 at pci0 dev 7 function 0 "Acer Labs M1543 PCI-ISA" rev 0x00 emu0 at pci0 dev 10 function 0 "Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live" rev 0x05: irq 9 ac97: codec id 0x54524123 (TriTech Microelectronics TR28602) audio0 at emu0 "Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live Digital Input" rev 0x05 at pci0 dev 10 function 1 not configured "Sigma Designs DVDmagic-PRO" rev 0x02 at pci0 dev 11 function 0 not configured xl0 at pci0 dev 13 function 0 "3Com 3c900B 10Mbps" rev 0x04: irq 9 address 00:50:04:cf:d1:02 "Acer Labs M7101 Power Mgmt" rev 0x00 at pci0 dev 17 function 0 not configured isa0 at pcib0 isadma0 at isa0 pckbc0 at isa0 port 0x60/5 pckbd0 at pckbc0 (kbd slot) pckbc0: using irq 1 for kbd slot wskbd0 at pckbd0: console keyboard, using wsdisplay0 pcppi0 at isa0 port 0x61 midi0 at pcppi0: <PC speaker> sysbeep0 at pcppi0 lpt0 at isa0 port 0x378/4 irq 7 npx0 at isa0 port 0xf0/16: using exception 16 pccom0 at isa0 port 0x3f8/8 irq 4: ns16550a, 16 byte fifo pccom1 at isa0 port 0x2f8/8 irq 3: ns16550a, 16 byte fifo fdc0 at isa0 port 0x3f0/6 irq 6 drq 2 fd0 at fdc0 drive 0: 1.44MB 80 cyl, 2 head, 18 sec fd1 at fdc0 drive 1: 1.2MB 80 cyl, 2 head, 15 sec biomask c240 netmask c240 ttymask c2c2 pctr: user-level cycle counter enabled mtrr: Pentium Pro MTRR support wd0: no disk label dkcsum: wd0 matched BIOS disk 80 dkcsum: wd1 matched BIOS disk 81 root on wd1a rootdev=0x10 rrootdev=0x310 rawdev=0x312 WARNING: / was not properly unmounted uhub0: port 2, set config at addr 2 failed uhub0: device problem, disabling port 2 umass0 at uhub0 port 4 configuration 1 interface 0 umass0: PQI Flash Reader, rev 2.00/1.09, addr 2 umass0: using SCSI over BBB-P scsibus2 at umass0: 2 targets sd0 at scsibus2 targ 1 lun 0: <Generic, STORAGE DEVICE, 0109> SCSI0 0/direct removable sd0: drive offline ifconfig xl0: xl0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 address: 00:50:04:cf:d1:02 media: Ethernet 10baseT (10baseT half-duplex) inet6 fe80::250:4ff:fecf:d102%xl0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1 inet 172.17.38.69 netmask 0xfffff000 broadcast 172.17.47.255 netstat -rn: Routing tables Internet: Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Mtu Interface default 172.17.32.1 UGS 0 8 - Take the IP address of the DNS server you're supposed to use and ping it. If you can't reach it, either the netmask on your external interface or the default gateway is wrong (or they just didn't give you the right address of the DNS server). Once you can ping the DNS server, run $ dig @ip.of.dns.server www.openbsd.org which should print, among other things, www.openbsd.org. 86386 IN A 129.128.5.191 if it doesn't, the DNS server is reachable but not answering your queries, maybe it's not even a DNS server, wrong IP address, etc. Once it answers, make sure you enter the name server in your /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver ip.of.dns.server lookup file bind Then run nslookup and enter www.openbsd.org, you should see Server: name.of.dns.server Address: ip.of.dns.server Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.openbsd.org Address: 129.128.5.191 If all of this works, you should be able to ping by hostname instead of by IP address, at least from the box you verified all this on. AFAIK requesting domain-name-servers is the default. -- Chris Dukes "earthly insanity/brings us conformity the tinkling bells call me/it plays a leading role I never could foresee/the purity you stole" -- arte.fa(t's 'Purification' |

| Clueless admin gave me the wrong DNS servers. I went into Windows, typed ipconfig /all, and got the DNS servers.
