I both cases I can imagine that depencies outside the ports system play
a roll.

What I've experienced myself is that just have try and see where it
fails or doesn't fail.

Why such a huge leap? Why not compile from /usr/ports?

What are the implications of running a 3-year-old distro exposed to
the net when dozens of security fixes (not to mention feature
improvements) are not installed?

What does it say about the person running it, knowing that upgrades are

I see.

I noticed that other Free distributions of BSD come with installable
compatability libraries so that a new system may run packages from ALL old
versions of the OS.

Am curious if OpenBSD has similar installable compatability libraries.

It was more a hypothetical question to see what packages will be available
for me in the future if I install OpenBSD on a system that can have NIL down
time for a few years.

no. in many cases, a symlink may work. or save the old libraries. but
you're on your own.
