| Hi guys! Having been a happy i386/iopenbsd user fior years, I recently found one Ultrasparc 5 with just a CDRom drive sitting on a shelf at work. So I put in a Maxtor 6Y120P0 120Gb, but the machine won't recognize more than fraction of disk space. So I put in a Promise UltraDMA 133 ide controller in PCI slot 2 and voila! I'am able see all the disk and install OpenBSD 3.5 with no problems to wd0. Now comes the problem. When I reboot the system it won't even try to boot from the disk. I assume this has to do with the Openboot or whatever this Sun bios is called. As an almost total newbie on Sun hardware, is there anyone out there who knows a/the method to be able to boot directly from this drive? I have included below then "show-devs" and "devalias" from from Openboot, plus dmesg, which show the Maxtor at "pciide1 at pci2 dev 2" etc. Anyone know a way to set this up ? Thanks in advance! As an almost total newbie on Sun hardware, is there anyone out > there who knows a/the method to be able to boot directly from this > drive? i'm pretty sure you can't. the firmware will only talk to a limited set of controllers it knows about. this isn't like a pc which emulates some lowest common denominator controller. you'll have to add a boot drive onto the main channel. -- |

| The U5's IDE controller is the slowest thing on the planet. It's so slow it's very sad. I intended to use mine as a samba file server but it couldn't even saturate 100Mbit (writing to disk over network) while a crappy PC with the same drive had no problems. If it wasn't for the damned IDE controller it would be a great machine. -- Sean |

I bought up a couple of old Diamond Fireport 40 cards from eBay a while back because they're NCR/Symbios 53c875 based. They'll even work out of the box in Solaris because Sun's older PCI SCSI cards were based on the same chipset. The Tekram 390F is another one to look for. -Gary |
