 bpf performance i'm not currently setup to do the testing for this, so i'd like to ask for a little help. i want to find out how fast bpf is. first off, to get decent performance you will probably need to crank the sysctl up some to get a bigger buffer. what i'm really concerned with is how close to line speed can you get? can a soekris capture at 100mbs? a 3ghz box at 1000mbs? please test with both a simple filter (all packets), a complicated filter that only matches some packets, and a complicated filter that eventually does match all the packets you are sending. i'd like to find out if there is a bottleneck, and whether it's on the evaluation side or copying side. i don't actually use bpf more than about twice a year or i could test it myself, but it strikes me as something that would be fun to poke at if i knew what/if needed improvement. just mail me, no need to bother the list. thanks. -- quit whining you haven't done anything wrong because frankly you haven't done much of anything      |
