The SI and the IEC are not? Especially since the IEC is about
electrotechnics.

I think they said 64K or 65k (notice the difference in capitalising).
You just can't do the trick with M because m already means Milli.

(I also wondered why 16'777'216 colours are 16 million colours... oh well.)
