| Dears , I want help from all of you after some pause of time. Infact what i received last week a big black box called 3583 tape library. It is a network library so when i assign an ip to it's RMU , i can ping it and even using browser on Pseries machine i can access RMU web interface of 3583 easily. Now the question arises ....how pseries servers on network can take backups on this network tape library. There is no device for this library appearing on AIX ( like we do have for network printers on AIX). May be my understanding is wrong but still the question remains valid. If the library is on network and accesible to all AIX servers on network , how i can take backups remotely on tape drives in the library. I wait for all your help. SASA |

| The RMU (Remote Monotoring Unit) is not for network backup. Its a gizmo to see whats displayed on the frontpanel and can be used to upgrade firmware and microcode of the library. You still have to attach the tapedrives and library to either SCSI or SAN depending on configuration. /HE -- Håkan Ekdahl Pulsen Systems AB "sasa queer" <sasa1973pk@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:702930ee.0310162327.7de48473@posting.google.c om... > Dears , > I want help from all of you after some pause of time. > Infact what i received last week a big black box > called 3583 tape library. It is a network library so when i assign an > ip to it's RMU , i can ping it and even using browser on Pseries > machine i can access RMU web interface of 3583 easily. > Now the question arises ....how pseries servers on network can take > backups > on this network tape library. > There is no device for this library appearing on AIX ( like we do > have for network printers on AIX). > May be my understanding is wrong but still the question remains valid. > If the library is on network and accesible to all AIX servers on > network , how i can take backups remotely on tape drives in the > library. > I wait for all your help. > > SASA |

| tHANKS FOR your help! I think that 3583 is a network library that means any server on LAN can take backup on tape drives present in library. Am i right in this thinking!!! If not please correct me and if i am right in this thinking then how i would do that! Please guide me on this issue! SASA Sure, although you will need additional software to accomplish that. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (ITSM) version 5.2 can do that very easily, but will also require additional licenses for the base product to do what they call 'LAN-free backups'. Or you can get the base product and attach it to a server, then have other servers send their data to the backup server over the network. ITSM isn't the only software, of course. There are others like Legato Networker or Veritas NetBackup that can do it. Basically, you need additional software -- doesn't matter if you purchase it commercially or write your own -- to do what you want. -Dan |

The LTO 3583 tape library is not a *network* library. |

| Very much thanks for all ur help; Dan ! that is what i am thinking....without TSM or Legato networker it will not be possible to take backups remotely. But what then purpose of having tape library on network. As far as SAN is concerned i have FC adapters on my three AIX machines and they connect to SAN switch and then to 3583 through SAN switch. However my question was regarding to my remaining 5 P630s which do not have FC cards but just ethernet cards. As bruno said that 3583 is not network library then which libararies models are network tape libraries! Please guide me !!! Well, we have a 3584 which can attach over either SCSI or SAN. But even with a SAN, you still need software to control access to the drive, to keep a record of files backed up in a database, etc. Enterprise software like TSM or Legato does that stuff. We use TSM so I am more familiar with that than with other backup products for more complex situations such as with a SAN. I should make it clear that TSM can handle SAN backups but only if you also buy additional licenses to enable the LAN-free feature (SAN backups). Depending on your need and situation, it may be cheaper to send data over a TCP/IP network (i.e. gigabit ethernet) to a dedicated backup server with directly attached tape libraries because that usually saves you money on software licensing costs for expensive SAN software add-ons to TSM or Legato. -Dan |

The purpose of having the tape library on the network so that you can interact with the library manager software instead of having to go down to the library and use the controller there. As stated earlier, the tape library you have, it is not possible to directly backup data to tape using normal networks, however it is possible to backup the data over the network to the tape drives, but using another piece of software TSM or Legato on a different server to control this. The tape drives will be either SCSI or Fibre attached to this different server. I'm not aware of any tape drive that has ethernet or token ring connectivity. Steve |
