| I'm trying to add a print queue in smit for an OkiPage8z printer that is hooked up to a HP JetDirect300x print server. I can print to the print server from windows, so I know that it and the printer are working. I have tried adding it in SMIT as a "Generic Printer" and used ASCII, PCL, and PostScript. I have also tried adding it as an HP LaserJet 4 just for S&G. I can't get any of these to work. Oki does not produce a UNIX print driver for this printer. Do I have any other options? Thanks, Dale |

Can you ping the Jetdirect? Can you telnet to the Jetdirect on TCP port 9100? What happens when you try to print? Queue down? Queue stays RUNNING? Job disappears but nothing prints? |

It says ready after issuing this command: lp -dQUEUENAME testprint.file Unfortunately, nothing comes out of the printer. I suspect I need an OKI print driver... I cannot test this anymore until Monday as the printer is at work and I have no way of knowing if something spit out it or not. |

Is the virtual printer you set up ASCII or PCL or PostScript? If the queue is ASCII or PCL I'd think you'd get something coming out of the printer. What about trying: echo "does this print" | /usr/lib/lpd/pio/etc/piohpnpf -x <hostname> Best regards, Paul |

I have tried setting up the virtual printer as ASCII, PCL, and PostScript, all with no results. > What about trying: > echo "does this print" | /usr/lib/lpd/pio/etc/piohpnpf -x <hostname> Same results as previously. The print queue still says ready and the print job does not appear in it. Maybe this printer just never was meant to print from UNIX.... :-( |

I had a similar problem with a Brother Computer. I finally ended up using a slightly more expensive HP printer, even though HP didn't say that it would work with Unix. |

The print job leaves UNIX and never comes out of the printer. I think it is most likely because of the type of printer I am using. Thanks! Dale |

| If the print server accept ftp access then simple try to copy a postscript file to the printer. Afaik the oki 8z is a postscript printer so in case its gets postscript it should print it. hth Hajo |
