Default AIX IBM Redbooks

Folks,
Just a reminder that there are IBM publications named Redbooks
available on a variety of AIX, pSeries, p5, and UNIX topics.
Publications are available in PDF and HTML and are free for the
download. They are also available in hardcopy for a fee.

It is soooo amazing how many questions can be answered just by doing a
search in the documentation ;-)

Well, between the redbooks, the 'official' documentations library

http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/pseries/library/

and technical tips

http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/...aix.srchBroker

Most everything is documented.

There are still those times when I turn to do something and this huge
blank forms in what's left of my mind - and it is really great to be
able to come here and get unstuck.

Heck, forming the questions works a good bit of the time. 8-)

Personally, I tend to call IBM support, we pay them a boat load of money for
support, why not use it? Besides, it kills time ;-)
I just wish they would call me back for a survey when I don't get the needed
answers. You ever notice they only call you if the PMR was closed within
15 minutes of it being opened??

Everyone on the account advocate team knows my name (and runs in fear).
Right now I am between gigs and the support that came with my 5.2 has
run out.

But even when I would turn problems into complaints and kick them up the
line, I found valuable bits here.

As for the survey, I think it is built into the system. It is a
feature, not a bug. 8-)

Still, IBM service and support may not be what it once was (if it ever
was) but it seems to hold up with the competitors (though I have spent
the least time with HP).

Of course, everyone knows the keyword 'escalate', right? 8-)

Speaking as a user who has read a lot of the recent ones - they're
actually very readable now. Written like books rather than the old manual
style. Good on you, IBM

Now we are just waiting for a "WebSphere 6 New Features for Administrators
and Developers" and a "Power 5 New Features" and a "JS20 Administration
Guide" and I will be a happy man!

Can think of other much more exciting thing to make me a happy man! ;-)
Just having fun
If you can read them like a book, you are a better man then I, or addicted
to coffee :-)
Have a good one!

To me, the biggest timekiller is getting the first call-answerer to take
down the right info to get it auto-assigned to the right group.

I have had lots of experience with various vendors' support, and IBM has
always been at the top tier, once you get in the door. ("Is your 7029
connected to a mainframe, a PC or an RS/6000?" Huhhhh????)

They will pull in another expert when needed (rather than just fish
around for an answer), and they will call back to see if everything went
well.

The surveys are probably just internal marketing mickey mouse, but I
like the quality of response I get when I call up with a thorny issue.

Invariably. For the last 19 years. Every time I've raised a problem and
the resolution has been simple, it's been followed shortly by someone
calling with a questionnaire about service levels. Never happens after the
ones which take weeks or more.

> Still, IBM service and support may not be what it once was (if it ever

Well, AIX support in 2005 doesn't differ in any noticeable degree to MVS
support in 1986 when I started in this game. They still try to prove it
isn't their problem first, then insist on an unreasonable amount of
documentation to prove that you really do have a problem. But if you
persist to this degree, they then do look into it.

But God help you if you have a multi vendor problem. That hasn't changed
either.

Regards, Ian

Doing AIX support was the most monty-pythonesque
activity available at the time.
Eagerly awaiting my thin chocolat mint.
