I have a AIX system that I installed originally from a 5.1 ML0 CD. I
have updated the system to ML6 or so and lost the root password. When I
tried to boot from the original CD and mount rootvg, I get errors about
the libc missing symbols. IBM web site says I need a newer ML boot CD.

How does one get these or are we doomed to have to purchase AIX cds for
every ML to ensure we can recover the system.

Since this is AIX 5, I would suggest running mkcd to generate a bootable CD
set. If all you care for is diagnostics and recovery, you only need to burn
the first CD image in the set. That should take care of any ML dependencies.

This is a real pain! Ways I have got around it, is to boot from the
latest mksysb tape (if you have one). If you don't have a CD-writer on
your AIX box (I don't), you can ask mkcd to create an ISO compliant
image that you can FTP to you Win/Linux/Mac or other O/S that has a
burner and create the first disk that way.

Or to boot from a NIM spot that has the same or later level.
