| Hi -- I have a 7013-595 running AIX 5.1. It doesn't get used very often; the last time I used it was almost a month ago. Back then, it worked fine, and shut down without any problems. Today, I can't get it to switch on. I plugged it in, flipped the power switch, and nothing happened. No flicker of LEDs, no display, no fans ... it's as if there were no power at the wallplate. I checked to make sure that there was power, and I tried several power cords. I even checked to make sure none of the internal connections had come loose. I don't have any hardware manuals for this particular machine. What would cause a 7013-595 to act so dead all of a sudden? Thanks, CL |

If there are any internal fuses on the psu, I would look at them. I'm afraid to say that electronic equipment does have a habbit of developing a fault when switched on or off, and less so when in use. It sounds very much like the power supply has developed a fault, but I don't know the equipment. I had a look for the service manual. At this page, http://publib16.boulder.ibm.com/pser...13_jseries.htm devoted to the 7103 J series boxes, it mentions "For other 7013 models see 7013 500 Series Installation and Service Guide." You might try asking IBM if that manual can be found. -- Dr. David Kirkby, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Medical Physics, University College London, 11-20 Capper St, London, WC1E 6JA. | Thanks for the information. I too ran into that link on the IBM site, but the 500 series manual is nowhere to be found. I can't find any obvious fuses or breakers on that PSU. It's a huge device, but I can only see cables coming out of it. The most obvious answer is that the power supply has blown. But there's no evidence that that happened -- the last time I used the machine, it properly executed its shutdown, and the computer has been disconnected since. (I haven't had room for it in my office until this weekend, so it's been temporarily housed somewhere else.) And I have seen this behavior on PCs before, where the culprit wasn't the power supply at all, but an improper connection or other hardware issue (once it was a screw that had fallen onto the motherboard). I'm hoping that it's something like this, because if the PSU needs replacing, I'm afraid that the machine will be out of order indefinitely. :-( Thanks again, CL "Dr. David Kirkby" <drkirkby@ntlworld.com> wrote in message news:3F220022.2FE377AE@ntlworld.com... > Charles Lavin wrote: > > > > Hi -- > > > > I have a 7013-595 running AIX 5.1. | From the 7013 500 Series Installation and Service Guide, MAP 1520:7013 Power MAP: After checking that the outlet has power and other things like that: Step 3: 1) Set the power switch to off. 2) Remove covers. 3) Disconnect the power cable connectors from the devices in the top of the system unit, but not from the fans. 4) Disconnect the power cable connectors from the disk drives in the bottom of the systems unit, but not from the fans. 5) Disconnect the power cables from the CPU planar or system planar. P16 is not connected on some planars. For models 520, 52H, 530, 53H, 540, 550 and 560 disconnect P13, P14, P15 and P16. For models 570, 580, 58H, 590, 59H, 591 and 595 disconnect P13, P14 and P16. For model 55L disconnect P2 and P25. ATTENTION: P2 and P25 must be connected and disconnected at the same time. 6) For models 520, 52H, 53H, 540, 550, 560, 570, 580, 58H, 590, 59H, 591 and 595 disconnect the power cable connectors P40 and P41 from the I/O planar (if present). 7) Set the power switch on the unit to ON. Did the power-on light come on and stay on and are all of the fans running continuously? No Go to step 4 Yes Go to step 6 I didn't know you could run the power supply with no load. P13, P14, P15 and P16 connect to the CPU planar to the right of the memory boards. On the 55L the power connectors, P2 and P25 are on the top of the board in the center. Step 4: Did the poweron light come on and go off? No: Exchange power supply. Yes: Goto step 5. Step 5: This problem can be caused by one of the following FRUs: Cooling fan. System planar (model 55L only). Power supply. Let me know the results of that test and I'll type in the next step. We have a scanner at work. I may be able to scan some pages in. Not sure what type of file I'll get, but if it's text I might be able to post it. I could FAX it to you. There's a guy on e-bay who sells CDs with all of the user/service guide for RS/6000 systems: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2744538406 I did a "buy it now" yesterday on that item, so I don't have it yet. I hope it has the electronic version of the books, not scaned in versions. Hope this helps Robert "Charles Lavin" <x@x.x> wrote in message news:<vi40sbf31c1tf6@corp.supernews.com>... > Thanks for the information.
