Default downtime/maintenance window

I want to survey here how easier you can find downtime for
maintenence
Will users allow you easily once a month for hacmp and AIX
maintenance?
What are you general maintenance window policies?

Do users easily allow downtime?
for How long?
how frequent?
day of the week?
time of the day?
Area : ( bank, insurance, health center etc)?

may be I am able to know : how the down time wndow policies differs?
from one to other
Hope you won't mind my question

Thank you very much.............

Quite a strange question - why are you asking as this is really going
to vary a lot.

Anyway - the 'area' is retail and we define maintenance windows as
follows:

Now we have started to use AIX partitions we have had to define a
maintenance window for each whole managed system. We have decided on
a Sunday morning from about 01:00-07:00 (give or take a few hours
either side depending on when jobs/users are off the partitions).
This is when we can do system wide changes, eg firmware, adding memory
etc as its a 'best-fit' for all the applications concerned.

We have asked for around four outages per year if necessary for each
system, so its not like we take the system down every week.

We also use a SAN so we have to consider this as well, as this also
has a maintenance window which I believe is currently different from
the AIX window. I think this is under review as obviously its not
very sensible the way it is.

For changes which affect just one partition we will negotiate downtime
on a partition by partition basis as and when maintenance needs to be
applied, this is for AIX and also for the application running on the
partition. This varies as it just depends when the application is
needed - I cant give a general rule as there isnt one really although
normally it will be overnight work - so there is sort of a general
rule ;-)

What we will try and do is also setup our applications and databases
so we can easily fail over from live to a backup server when we do
maintenance which allows us to have more flexible windows.
