Default Dual Boot 4.2.1 and 5.1.0 system, using a new disk

Hi,

I currently have an AIX 4.2.1 system that I've added a new (to the system) 4 GB
hard drive, in preparation for installing AIX 5L v5.1.

I'd like to be able to install 5.1 on the new 4 GB disk, have access to the
other disks in the old 4.2.1 rootvg and a vg01, and, be able to change the
bootlist so that I can boot either 4.2.1 (hdisk0) or 5.1 on hdisk1.

The new disk has been formatted, certified and assigned a PVID but not added to
any VG.

The current hdisk0 is a 2.2 GB SCSI drive while the new added disk is a 4 GB
drive. The 4.2.1 rootvg consists of 2.2 GB hdisk0, a phantom hdisk1 that died,
and a 2.2 GB hdisk 2. VG01 has a 4 GB hdisk3 drive.

I was thinking about just doing a "clean" install on the new 4 GB drive. hdisk4
to the old system, but would probably be hdisk1 to the new system.

What would be the best way to install 5.1 on the new disk, but still have
access to the other disks and the old rootvg, as well as being able to boot
back into AIX 4.2.1 when needed?

Would the alt_disk_install be what I need? If so, should I clone rootvg onto
the new disk and then to an migrate install, but put to the new hdisk1? I have
a 4.2.1 mksysb that I could restore, unless there was a better way to clone the
existing rootvg between disks of two different sizes.

Your help and comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Mark
