Default DVD errors for mksysb

To whom it may concern:

We have slimline DVDRAM drives in some p550's, 2 in each, with one
DVDRAM allocated to a AIX 5.3 LPAR partition.

IBM 4.7 GB IDE Slimline DVD-RAM Drive
Feature code 5751

We have only been able to get IBM DVDs to work in the drives and
what's worse the only DVDs which work are the ones that came in a
cartridge for an older model DVDRAM drive. The DVD package says single
sided re-writable DVD-RAM 3x/5x TYPE II.

We used to be able to remove these drives from their cartridge and use
them but the casing has changed and the dvds are getting damaged
during removal.

Has any found a non-IBM DVD which works in this drive?

We have been using Maxell for several years with 5751 drive,
with no problems. Media DOES make a difference.
BTW the part number for Maxell DVD-RAM media is:

636070

I have that part in stock and am trying it now. I know these very
MAXELL's were tested 2 years ago and didn't work for us but we have
upgraded firmware since then. Thanks for the help.

Also, make sure your cdrecord rpm from the linux toolbox is up to
date, I ran into this yesterday with one of my machines. I had a
backrev 'cdrecord' from what's current and it would not recognize the
dvd-ram media and it even was branded IBM! I upgraded cdrecord to
what's current, 1.9, I was able to write a mksysb to this same media.
I am now writing one to a TDK dvd-ram.

HTH,

IBM buys from various vendors....

Get a recent cdrtools

ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

and try out. Cdrecord supports all kinds of DVDs.

cdrecord is not from a "linux toolbox", it is portable OpenSource
softwware and Linux is one of the supported platforms.

The official cdrtools (cdrecord) sources are not in rpm format.
Be careful, as there are many broken (patched) versions from
Linux people around. Get a recent original source from here:

ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

1.9 is extremely old, it is 7 years old!

The latest version is cdrtools-2.01.01a27.

Check with IBM's AIX supportline on the old , original DVD drive ONLY
IBM media was supported but on the new drives they might have a list
of supported media. If you use unsupported media and are not using
supported media and can not restore
what will you tell your management when you have AIX support on a
conference call and they ask the type of media that you are using?
