| I have a p550 with the two onboard 10/100/1000 NICs and a third 10/100/1000 NIC. It looks like the only way to get 1000 (Gigabit) is to set the NIC devices to Auto_Negotiation. I'm not a big fan of auto negotiate. I'm also useing Etherchannel for these NICs. 0 and 1 are regular, 2 is failover. I'm curious to hear people experiences with using auto negotiate for Gigabit, and whith Etherchannel. The Etherchannel documentation says to set the speed of the NICs... Thoughts... T. |

| "1000 MBps half and full duplex are not valid values. As per the IEEE 802.3z specification, gigabit speeds of any duplexity must be auto- negotiated for copper (TX) based adapters. Please select auto- negotiation if these speeds are desired." (http://publib16.boulder.ibm.com/doc_...aixprggd/kerne xtc/ethernet_dd.htm) Bye Holger |

Now whether you believe your network designers is another matter, but anything but autonegotiate makes our network designers blow their stacks. There are political reasons to use autonegotiate. |

This seems to be resolved with latest NIC's. On our p690's and p650' we are using 'Auto Negotiation' with no problems. For the p690 lpars the media speed is negotiated to 1000 Mbps Full Duplex ('entstat -d ent1'). For the p650, the media speed is negotiated to 100 Mbps Full Duplex. The p690 lpars are connected to a newer switch hence the higher connection speed. |
