| does anyone know what the ACTUAL hardware requirements are to run AIX 5.2??? i know IBM likes to pretend it will run just fine on any old-ass IBM box in the world... i think they say something like "a 200mhz proc & 128mbram"... but come on...seriously... whats the lowest platform on which i could expect to run this OS in a reasonable manner? (assuming no kde/gnome/x stuff... just CLI... and no super heavy apps... just day to day stuff) |

| Our application is a COBOL based Inventory and Accounting package. It is the only software on the RS/6000 besides the O/S and a fax software (Esker VSI-FAX). I have these three small systems running without incident...no complaints of performance issues. The high memory was to reduce disk I/O. We store the data in memory instead of having to keep going back to disks. I heard the minimum recommended memory for AIX 5.2 is 256MB. B50 375mhz, 1gb memory, 1 cpu for 10 users 6E1 450mhz, 512mb memory, 1 cpu for 25 users 6H1 600mhz, 1gb memory, 1 cpu for 70 users The rest of our systems are Model 520, 6E1, 6H1, or 55A as we have been replacing the older models and upgrading to 64-bit versions of our products and their requirements are much higher since we implemented an RDBMS version with Oracle or Informix as its engine in place of the COBOL. Hope this helps. Steve |

Works just great, except for java (which is a slug on this box). I have 3GB RAM, but I don't use anywhere near that for builds and testing. IOW AIX runs just fine on modest systems, but you'll likely want at least 512 MB - 1 GB ram. |
