| Hi All Out office inherited a RS/6000 7044 Model 270 with a pair 18gb hard drives. We need to increase the amount of additional available HD storage on the machine by at least 100 (+/-) GB. Can anyone make a recommendation of how to reasonable (cost) accomplish this? Thanks in advance |

This was a 36 GB drive and came on a special carrier for installation inside our machine. Supposedly the computer will work with 72 GB drives but they were not available when we were shopping for the new drive. A cheaper alternative would be to get an external case and install generic HDs in it. These would not be covered by IBM maintenance if that is a concern to you. |

We then installed SCSI drives into the case and connected to the external connector on the RS/6000. They were listed as other SCSI devices and ran for years on our system. The only caveats are they may not be as fast as internal drives because the external connector may not be as fast as the internal connector. Also the connecting cable may be expensive and hard to get. I would try the internal solution first and if it won't work for you talk to a good computer dealer or one of the online vendors like Insight. They should be able to get you the case and drives. You may have to go to IBM to get the SCSI cable. |
