| Hello, I would appreciate if anyone can offer advice to my problem. So far I had encountered 2 instances whereby the systems running with paging space hd6 not active. They were running AIX 4.3.2 version. Below lsps commands revealed the respective result. I could not activate hd6 nor create another paging space. lsps -a Page Space Physical Volume Volume Group Size %Used Active Auto Type hd6 hdisk0 rootvg 512MB 0 no yes lv lsps -s Total Paging Space Percent Used 32MB 6% Thank |

It would be helpful if you showed us the commands you used to create and activate paging space and the error messages you got. Yours, Laurenz Albe |

I used smitty lvm to try re-activating the hd6 but failed. I also could not add another paging space, say paging00. By default, hd6 was 64MB during initial AIX install. It was increased to 512MB. Somehow, the total paging space was shown only 32MB with some percentage usage when using lsps -s command. Thanks |

For a start, give us the output of lsps, lsvg -l rootvg, lspv hdisk0. |

SNIP Have you checked the "/sbin/rc.boot" file to make sure hd6 is set to swapon: swapon /dev/hd6 Or is it set to some other device? -- Dana French |

Hence, AIX created it own temporary paging space. Run # chps -a y hd6 This will activate hd6 during reboot. You can also put an entry in rc.boot if you want to. To use hd6 right away, run # swapon /dev/hd6 Please post any errors you may find during running this command. Confirm dev/hd6 is active by giving us the output of lsps -a, lsps -s, lsvg -l rootvg. Hope this will help. Rgds |

| tristarsg <tristarsg@yahoo.com> wrote: >>>>> I could not >>>>> activate hd6 nor create another paging space. > > Hopefully the below information helps The information is not enough - these listings show no problem. I would like to see the following: - The contents of the file /etc/swapspaces - The result of 'grep swapon /sbin/rc.boot' - The result of 'grep swapon /etc/rc' - The response to the command 'swapon /dev/hd6' Maybe that helps to determine the problem. If all these do not point to an error, and the entry in /sbin/rc.boot seems ok, maybe somebody changed the /sbin/rc.boot file after the boot logical volume was created. You can find out if that is the problem by issuing: bosboot -a -d /dev/hdisk# using any hdisk that contains a copy of /dev/hd5 (see lslv -p output, usually it is hdisk0 or hdisk1). Then reboot. If the problem is gone, it means that /sbin/rc.boot had been chenged since the last bosboot. Yours, Laurenz Albe |

If the problem is gone, it means that /sbin/rc.boot had been > chenged since the last bosboot. > > Yours, > Laurenz Albe Hello, I have gathered the information on one of the systems for the following : 1)/etc/swapspaces has entry hd6: dev = /dev/hd6 2) /sbin/rc.boot script has # Start paging if no dump [ ! -f /needcopydump ] && swapon /dev/hd6 3) /etc/rc script has swapon -a 4)Using command line, swapon /dev/hd6, system prompt returned with no error. But by using smitty lvm to activate hd6, the status showed failed without reporting error message. I could create another paging space called paging00, it could not be activated. When I issued swapon -a, below is the error message : 0517-072 swapon: Cannot activate paging device /dev/paging00. : A system call received a parameter that is not valid. I had issued bosboot -ad /dev/hdisk0 and would monitor the result on the next reboot over the weekend. |
