| Hi, Exactly how many backup's to external media are required in order to recover a broken HMC? A colleague seems to think that 2 seperate backups need to be in place. A Critical Console Data backup made to DVD and a profile data backup to DVD. I was under the impression that if you backed up your profile data to disk, the CCD backup would include this. Is it necessary to schedule these 2 backups to seperate media? Thanks. |

| When you perform a profile backup it saves it to /var/hsc/profiles/system-name. When you do the CCD backup it gets dump to DVD. ste_mc@zdnetmail.com wrote: > Hi, > > Exactly how many backup's to external media are required in order to > recover a broken HMC? > > A colleague seems to think that 2 seperate backups need to be in place. > A Critical Console Data backup made to DVD and a profile data backup > to DVD. > > I was under the impression that if you backed up your profile data to > disk, the CCD backup would include this. > > Is it necessary to schedule these 2 backups to seperate media? > > Thanks. |

| In spite of IBM recommeding this, I believe that manual backup of profile data is not so necessery because a backup file having the profile data is created by default at the time when HMC is first connected to the managed system. On each subsequent reboot of HMC this default file gets updated with any profile changes, if any have occured. Still this can be backed up and multiple copies of this file can be maintained. Any one copy of these can be used for recovery. On the other hand CCD backup is important as apart from backing up HMC configuration, it also backs up the /var/hsc/profile/MT-MDL*SN directory containing profile backup.
