| Have a 7009-C10 on a 3151 console with AIX 4.3.3.0 (non GUI ) installed. Got 4330011.tar.gz into /usr/sys/inst.images expanded okay into *.bff files and a .toc file done. Ran installp -acgXd /usr/sys/inst.images smit update_all instead of installp -acgXd /usr/sys/inst.images bos.rte.install smit update_all ie left " bos.rte.install " out of the first command I ran. in 23 seconds a few things installed successfully , like bos.rte, something version 4.3.3.81, smit (which briefly flashed across the console screen) and I was back to the console command line. Re ran the correct command line but AIX rejected the idea. Rebooted and tried the correct command line again but AIX was not interested. Tried again from within smit but no luck. # oslevel shows 4.3.3.0 #oslevel -r shows 4320.02 Heck, I have really gone backwards. Any way to get this installation to 4.3.3.11 or do I have to reinstall from scratch again. |

Gud luck! |

How does one find them in the 570 odd *.bff files in /usr/sys/inst.images. #oslevel -rl 4330-11 gives them in English names not *.bff numerical names. I suppose to reinstall AIX4.3.3.0 and do the ver11 update will be simpler and quicker. Us dumb old retired newbies just have to go the long way around. Thanks Uruki-hai, you have made me realise one has to be very careful and accurate with AIX commands. At least AIX will come back up for a novice whereas Bill's system just gives you a blue screen. Now over to my 7011-320 where I am installing a fourth HDD to give me enough room to get it up from AIX4.1 non gui to 4.3.3.11 gui, but it refuses to boot in service mode off a AIX 4.3.3 or a RS6000 CD51025.ISO diagnostics cd, and even refuses the 1A floppy so I can format the new 4329MB hard drive. Retirement can be fun. |

Don't give up yet Basil, you can download those files from fixcentral http://www-912.ibm.com/eserver/support/fixes/fixcentral Just 75 clicks away |

Next time use smitty so you can capture output (in /smit.log). If you use smit, it helps you keep track with what you did and at what date, which is good for auditing. > Re ran the correct command line but AIX rejected the idea. > Rebooted and tried the correct command line again but AIX was not > interested. > Tried again from within smit but no luck. | Uruk-hai and Neil Thank you very much for your advice, but every avenue I tied to get the files off that link an IBM ID was required. Have applied for one on several occasions and been approved by Australia, denignied by New York, reapproved by Hongkong then had the whole thing cancelled by an email I cannot reply to. Ibm Australia has tied me up in red tape. They ship me things on account but insist I have no account. They ship me publications and will not charge me. They ship me goods against my credit card. I owe them money, but they ignore requests for an account. Sent them a cheque, but it was returned as not a valid account. Over the last few months have dozens of emails from as many branches of IBM. I have never dealt with such a strange Company in nearly 50 years in business. To fill you in on some background, my lack of knowledge ties me up in knots. Have a 7012-250 with AIX 4.3.3.11 + Netscape on a P2P network but cannot get it to communicate with anyone except the WWW so cannot use it for downloads as no burner. My 7012-320 only has AIX4.2.1.0 and am trying to upgrade it to 4.3.3.11. This machine has a Gt3i and 6091-19i monitor so I figure if I can get it to 4.3.3.11, I can network it with the 7012-250 as a learning exercise. See seperate post. So any downloads have to be done on an XP machine and burnt to CD. Tomorrow will take the cowards way out and just start from scratch again on an AIX 4.3.3.0 reinstall and a ver 11 update on 7009-c10. This little critter refuses to accept a Gt3I or a GT4e and 6091-19i monitor. Perhaps getting it to 4.3.3.11 will make it see sense. Will learn this AIX yet. |

| I've had fairly good luck letting IBM's download manager decide what needed to be installed... Try going here: http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp...e=43&b=4330-11 Click on the download tab at the top, then "I Agree". Select 4330-02 in the oslevel, then run lslpp -Lc >> dl.txt on the box, and upload the dl.txt file in the next box. This will create a custom download package for this machine... if it doesn't leave you completely at 4.3.3.0-11, at least it should be less than 75 packages needed to download to get there. As for your 7011-320. It may need a firmware update in order to boot AIX 4.3.x I have this problem with some 7025-F80 and 7025-6F1 that did not want to boot AIX 5.3, and would actually corrupt NVRAM if I tried. Had to pop the battery out for a few minutes to get them to boot at all after attempting boot from AIX 5.3 disc1 or AIX 5.3 Diag disk. One problem you might also be running into with downloading on an XP PC and then transferring over is that Windows is not case specific on file names. You might have packages called bos.rte.EN.11.bff and bos.rte.en.11.bff. Windows would see them as the same file and only keep or download one of the two. I ran into this problem as well. Best solution I found for AIX boxen with no gui was to go through to the point of download on the Windows machine, then select FTP for the download method and grab them on AIX that way.
