| Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to AIX and are rather stuck. I've been trying to install AIX 5.2 from a set of CD's (direct from IBM) on to a IBM RS/6000 7025 F50. The main set of CDs (1-6) are marked: AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 10/2002 Despite the fact the system is now up and running, with CDE + networking working, I'm not convinced the installation is complete or very good. These are my specific problems/questions. Any suggestions welcome. 1) Can anyone tell me the names on the CDs? I have a set which has numbers 1-6, Update CD, Documentation CD and the Linux applications CD/GNU stuff (that CD is in my garage at the minute, so I'm not sure exactly what it has on it). Am I any CD's missing? I suspect I might be, since at one point the installation asks for a non-existant CD, the name of which I forgot. 2) When booting from CD #1, it complained there were missing filesets. devices.isa_sio.8042 devices.isa_sio.fdc devices.isa_sio.parallel devices.isa_sio.serial devices.pci.MTRX.Mystique devices.pci.display devices.pci.ethernet devices.pci.pcilass.010000 (I can't read my own writing - lass might be wrong) devices.pci.pcilass.020000 (I can't read my own writing - lass might be wrong) devices.pci.pcilass.030000 (I can't read my own writing - lass might be wrong) devices.pci.scsi I can't understand why the filesets should be missing off the first CD. Looking on the CD, I can see these files don't exist. I've not looked on the other CDs for the filesets, but errors were produced after booting from the first CD. It seems very odd for the install to decide it needs filesets that don't exist on the CD and so produce error messages. 3) Despite the fact I elected to install Netscape when installing the base operating system, this could not be installed, as again it could not find the filesets. (Whether this was for Netscape, or a perquisite for Netscape, I don't recall). 4) At one point the installation requested a CD that I don't have. I can't recall the name of the CD, but it was neither 1-6, Update CD, Documentation CD or the Linux applications CD - the only ones I have. There was an option to press 'q' to quit that CD, so I did that, and proceeded with the other CDs. 5) I'm in the UK, so selected the UK options when installing. One of things I needed to enter was the type of keyboard. There were two choices, based on whether there was a * above the number 8 on the keyboard, or some other character, which I can't recall. I selected the keyboard with the *, as that is what I have. Now shift-3 produces a UK pound sign, not a hash, despite the fact the keyboard has a hash above the number 3. Hence I can't put a comment (which usually begins with a hash) in a file. I can't produce the 'pipe' operator either, so doing something like ps -el | grep cron won't work. Luckily, its networked to another machine, so I can do such operations remotely. 6) I've tried to install IBM's C compiler (version 6.0). That complains: MISSING REQUISITES: The following filesets are required by one or more of the selected filesets listed above. They are not currently installed and could not be found on the installation media. bos.loc.utf.EN_US 4.1.0.0 # Base Level Fileset The fileset bos.loc.utf.EN_US does exist on AIX 5.2 CD #4, but it can't be installed since it needs fileset bos.loc.com.utf 4.3.2.0 # Base Level Fileset which does not appear to exist anywhere. Am I a CD missing? I'm sorry I don't recall the name of the CD, but I'm sure I'll reconise it if someone says 'you should have a CD called X too'. -- Dr. David Kirkby, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Medical Physics, University College London, 11-20 Capper St, London, WC1E 6JA. I have 9 CD's in total with AIX 5.2. AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 10/2002 Volume 1 of 6 AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 10/2002 Volume 2 of 6 AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 10/2002 Volume 3 of 6 AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 10/2002 Volume 4 of 6 AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 10/2002 Volume 5 of 6 AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 10/2002 Volume 6 of 6 AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 Documentation CD. (no date on it) AIX 5L for POWER V 5.2 5765-E62 Update CD 02/2003. AIX toolbox for Linux Applications for POWER Systems, featuring GNU Software 10/2002. I'd like to know if that is normal for AIX 5.2. The software was obtained at zero cost under IBM's Scholars program: http://www-3.ibm.com/software/info/university/ so I'm not sure this is same set of CDs that would be obtained with a commercial version of AIX. However, it seems odd that the installation is requesting a CD that does not exist. Since I was silly and did not write down the name of the CD requested, I'm not exactly making my life easy!! -- Dr. David Kirkby, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Medical Physics, University College London, 11-20 Capper St, London, WC1E 6JA. You should have 2 additionnal cdroms , bonus pack and expansion pack cdroms. It's possible they have been tarred on another cd (never seen that), but as Netscape is on one of these 2 (never remember which, the expansion I think), this is why you eventually haven't netscape (latest version can be downloaded from netscape's site). On these cdroms you can find Adobe Reader, various evaluation software, ... > > 2) When booting from CD #1, it complained there were missing filesets. > Not sure, only got a theory : AIX installation program first determines your configuration, then selects which fileset to install (the Table of Content of each cdrom of AIX lists the whole filesets of AIX - not only those on the cdrom; therefore it's possible for the installer to know whiwh filesets to install before having actually found them). At the time he was loking for them, they were not on the first cdrom, I presume they have been installed later. You can check this with lslpp -al | grep partial_name_of_the_fileset Of course yo have first to sort the pipe problem out > Now shift-3 produces a UK pound sign, not a hash, despite the fact the > keyboard has a hash above the number 3. Don't know for english, but for french environment you've gout several versions such as ISO8859-1, ISO8859-15, alternate or non alternate, ... Try to look in smitty => systems environnment => language management => primary language (not sure of the name of this item, but it is the first of the smit menu). When you browse the keyboards list, scroll the screen on the right (right arrow) to be able to completely read the output as it is often truncated, you could have missed something. > > 6) I've tried to install IBM's C compiler (version 6.0). I'll ask IBM if that was supposed to be in the package. I did not buy these as such, but got them free for academic research. It's possible such non-commerical sets don't include all of the CDs that the commerical version does. I've no idea. > > 2) When booting from CD #1, it complained there were missing filesets. > > > > Not sure, only got a theory : AIX installation program first > determines your configuration, then selects which fileset to install > (the Table of Content of each cdrom of AIX lists the whole filesets of > AIX - not only those on the cdrom; therefore it's possible for the > installer to know whiwh filesets to install before having actually > found them). Thanks, someone else has said that too. > You can check this with > lslpp -al | grep partial_name_of_the_fileset > > Of course yo have first to sort the pipe problem out Cheers - another useful command to know. When I get to work and have access to a decent fast laser printer, I'll print out some of the Redbooks to learn a bit more. It's not very practical printing them on an old inkject printer. > > Now shift-3 produces a UK pound sign, not a hash, despite the fact the > > keyboard has a hash above the number 3. Thanks, I'll have to leave that for another day, as there is no monitor on the machine, so checking this will be difficult, but perhaps not impossible. > > 6) I've tried to install IBM's C compiler (version 6.0). I've got the C compiler installed now. I'm not 100% happy with it, but that will be another post. -- Dr. David Kirkby, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Medical Physics, University College London, 11-20 Capper St, London, WC1E 6JA.
