I have a problem and was hoping someone more skilled in aix may be able to
help me:
44p-170 running 5.2, I also have 5.1 media which I stupidly updated software
from which has now broken installp and geninstall so I cant fix - its also
broken mksysb etc
When installp trys to run the bosboot it fails at the mkfs with an error on
a line of the pci prototype file. I went back through my logs and found I
had committed 5.1 devices.pci filesets - I had `keep newer versions` but it
seems to have wound back now I cant installp the 5.2 files back.

A couple of possibilities to consider:

1) Boot from the AIX 5.2 install media and
see if it will let you do a "Preservation Install".

2) Find the devices.pci filesets on the AIX 5.2 install
media, mount the the on a cdrfs filesystem, do a
'restore -f devices.pci....' on each of those filesets
in a clean, non-root directory; then manually move
the files to the normal locations.
Repeat for any other filesets which you back-leveled.
If the system is usable after that, then do a
Force-Overwrite install of those filesets (again)
to get the lslpp ODM in sync and then re-apply
any AIX 5.2 maintenance that you may have had.

I think the first option is your best choice.
The second has risks and I offer no assurances that it will work.
