Default memory rule of thumb

Hi,

Is there any document of how much memory you need with aix 4.3.3 and
an rs6k machine? This of course in an enterprise environment.
I heard someone say that for maximum performance there should be
#cpu's x 2 GB mem = total mem. (so a 4-way should have 8GB memory...)
Is this true end is there a sort of IBM advisory document or
something?

Hope you can help me out.
Greetings,
RB

That method of calculating memory size is useless. Forget you ever
learned it.

The Redbook posted above is a good answer.

The best answer is to look at database configuration, application
configuration and the such and just add it up. There is no 'quick and
dirty' method for computing memory requirements. You need to know
what is going to be asked for by the apps and databases before you can
plan it out. After a few years, you'll be able to get a feel for what
is needed pretty easily - but this is through trial and error.
