| Looks like they f'd up at the factory and set a machine I want to run in SMP mode up as a LPAR setup. When I hook a laptop up the serial port and try to login to the SP to change the setting, after I hit enter on the user name, the system scoots by and tries to boot up. I want to run this in SMP mode, because I don't have an HMC, which means that the machine won't boot up in LPAR mode. Has anyone seen their P570 exhibit this kind of behaviour? How did you fix it? We have tried almost every combination of port speed and parity etc. and the best we can do is get the machine to start up to the login prompt for the SP, and then when you try to type in the password you get garbage characters, and the system goes on and tries to boot. Having the same problem on 4 servers. |

Wrong serial cable? > I want to run this in SMP mode, because I don't have an HMC, which > means that the machine won't boot up in LPAR mode. > Has anyone seen their P570 exhibit this kind of behaviour? In this case it is an default LPAR with all resources. > We have tried almost every combination of port speed and parity etc. > and the best we can do is get the machine to start up to the login > prompt for the SP, and then when you try to type in the password you > get garbage characters, and the system goes on and tries to boot. http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...US/info/iphby/ ascii.htm If you get garbage the connection is ok but the speed is wrong. Default speed on the p570 should be 19200. You can also try the ethernet ports: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...US/info/iphby/ browser.htm Bye Holger |

| The P570 is an install by IBM, as opposed to customer setup, machine presuming that it's new. Your CE should be able to login and fix this, or reset the SP and fix it, or if all else fails order a new SP and fix it that way. The P5 "SMP" mode is really an LPAR which sees all the system resources, it is different that the P4 machines were. But without a HMC connected, when you hit the power on button, it should power on to a logon prompt at the serial port eventually. The serial interface for the SP on P5 machines is a little flakey, and the com speed is 19.2 instead of 9600. It should work with a standard null-modem cable. Hope this helps, have fun On 19 Apr 2005 13:18:01 -0700, "robster" <robster3323@gmail.com> wrote: >Looks like they f'd up at the factory and set a machine I want to run >in SMP mode up as a LPAR setup.
