| Gentlemen, I am a Project Manager and have been employed by a company to set up a RISC System/6000 7015-990f for their use. The RS/6000's they have are second hand and haven't even got a Base Operating System installed on them. As a consequence we trying to boot them with disketts and install AIX V 4.2.1. So far, we insert the BOSBOOT diskette and it loads to c07, we then insert the Display Extensions diskette and it also reaches c07. Finally we insert the Display Boot diskette and it reaches c31. This is where we have our problem: there is no output of any information whatsoever on the terminal we have connected to the serial 1 port. The terminal we have is an IBM 3151, and it appears to work on its own. According to the documentation we have, when the diskettes reach c31 it is supposed to display information for selecting a console....but nothing is displayed to the terminal (console?). We have tested the cables and they're fine. So, if anyone out there can help my team with this dilemma then please e-mail me at ravellwommel@hotmail.com. It would be very much appreciated. Thanks. |

You might try getting a copy of AIX 5.1.0. It will run on a 990. BV |

AIX V 4 and 5 are not floppy bootable. The only way to install the RS6k with AIX 4.2 is to boot it from CDROM. Your boot disks might be AIX 3.2.x. You will need a bootable medium with the same version like your installation medium. The fact that you cannot see something on your 3151 may be caused by a wrong terminal setup. Regards - Ulli |

Since the LED displays C31 and nothing is displayed, I would suspect your cable to the display. This cable has to be a "full" handshaking null modem cable. Your display should be set to 9600 bps, 8 bit no parity. Finally you can not boot AIX 4.x from floppy. You should procure a copy of AIX 5.x. -- Regards, Jerry M. |

| Jerry and the rest of the comp.unix.aix contributors, Thankyou for your comments. Your help has been much appreciated and we have been able to solve our problem. It turns out that it was the cable. The one we were using was not a null-modem cable and that was the sole reason for nothing being written to the terminal screen. Once again I thank you all for your comments, they have been much aprreciated. I will be sure to recommend anyone with hardware and software problems to this site. Samuel Duff - Project Manager |
