| Hello, I've recently purchased a used IBM RS/6000 7044-170 "44P" 333MHz 1GB Ram, (2) 50GB Disk and AIX 5.3 With Maintenance Level 4 pre-installed. However, doing a 'prtconf' at the system prompt only shows 512mb of RAM but 1gb is installed: My question is how do I get the system to recognize the full 1GB RAM? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to AIX. boot image timestamp: 22:16 08/29 The current time and date: 00:35:52 09/04/2006 number of processors: 1 size of memory: 512MB boot device: /pci@fef00000/scsi@c/sd@0:2 kernel size: 13421062; 64 bit kernel ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [root@mach-1 /]#prtconf System Model: IBM,7044-170 Machine Serial Number: 10BA2FD Processor Type: PowerPC_POWER3 Number Of Processors: 1 Processor Clock Speed: 333 MHz CPU Type: 64-bit Kernel Type: 64-bit LPAR Info: -1 NULL Memory Size: 512 MB Good Memory Size: 512 MB Platform Firmware level: Not Available Firmware Version: IBM,SPH00056 Console Login: enable Auto Restart: true Full Core: false <snip> When I boot to the system configuration. I seem to remember that the banks had to be filled pairwise with the same type of memory, otherwise I saw a similar effect. The 170's hardware manual explains the order in which the banks have to be filled, it's kind of "interleaved" IIRC. HTH |

I don't believe you have to do anything special. You may have been shorted. That memory goes for a premium on the used market. |

I've seen such weird things before. > You may have been shorted. That memory goes for a premium on the used > market. Don't think so, memory for 44P's is pretty abundant and relatively cheap on eBay. |

Did noticed the paring up of "sticks" according to the manual. All 4 256mb stick are the same part number and manufacture. Had problems with it staying booted up when it first arrived. FedEx wasn't very kind to it and the seller did a real crappy job of packaging. Kept getting a FAN failure error on the front panel pointing to the CPU fan, but all it was, was a loose connection. I totally disassembled the box, cleaned it out (was a real dust box) and reseated everything, and even swapped the memory sticks around. Still no joy. Guess I'll play around moving the memory and see what happens. Thanks |

I didn't see the second half of his post (I was choking on a carmel apple at the time, typing with one hand). I could have saved some typing if I had read on. :-) As far as it being cheap, I guess I haven't caught the memory being sold on eBay. I have a 44p with 512M, and I have been itching to upgrade it. I just see the exorbitant prices the memory houses want, and the second-handers don't want much less. |
