| Hi there, Because I cannot afford any further SUN certification; anything beyond SCNA requires a very silly and very expensive instructor led course, I've decided to switch platforms. IBM seems to be quite attractive an alternative to Solaris; the _entire_ IBM certification curriculum is available in pdf format, free to download. Switching OS would imply switching hardware. Can anybody give me an educated 2 cents about whether swapping an "Ultra10 440Mhz" for an "RS/6000 43p model 140 233Mhz" would hardware wise constitute a fair deal, given the same amount of memory and disk space in both machines? Jae. |

Reasonably equivalent at a rough guess. The Sun has, I think, a faster CPU - I don't think the SPARC and the PPC differ that much in performance/MHz. But the IBM has SCSI disks while the Sun has IDE which IMO makes a difference. A 43P 140 won't run the latest AIX (5.2) but the Ultra10 will run the latest Solaris (9). This devalues the 43P somewhat. When AIX went from 5.1 to 5.2 a lot of old hardware got desupported. Sun have not done anything like this yet. Can't you keep the Sun and buy the 43P as well? They're only worth a few hundred dollars each. Regards, Ian |

For doing certification, the 43P will be fine as the certifications are currently for 5.1 Steve |

| I'd suggest the 43p Model 150.... fully supported for AIX 5.2. For doing certification, the 43P will be fine as the > certifications are currently for 5.1 Agreed, what I meant was that the lack of support for 5.2 will bring down the price of a model 140, which makes it the more suitable for the OP's purpose as it appears that he has not got a lot of spare cash to spend on it. I feel it would be a pity if he had to get rid of his Ultra10 to buy an RS/6000. As he appears to be seeking experience with a view to gainful employment, keeping up his skills in Solaris while learning AIX would seem to be worthwhile. Regards, Ian |
