| My department is using an 8-year-old RS/6000 workstation running AIX 4.3 to post web-related files. The building where the workstation is housed has had a few sudden power outages, but the OS has recovered after applying fschk to corrupted filesystems. After the blackout in NYC, I inspected the machine and was able to start the http daemon. However, after rebooting the system twice, the OS could not initiate many of the subsystems, in particular inetd. Because my colleagues update their web-related files by way of ftp, I need to get this problem corrected. Moreover, I am unable to remote login to the system. The error message that I get when I try to start the subsystem using smitty is as follows: "0513-130 The inetd subsystem could not be started. The System Resource Controller could not create an internal file in /var/adm/SRC. Please check the /var filesystem and the /var/adm/SRC directory and try again." My main question is "If the /var filesystem is corrupted, I know that I need to get into maintenance (service) mode, but the workstation is so old that it has a key that can set the machine into 'service' mode. Is this key setting sufficient to get into the correct mode?" If the filesystem isn't corrupted, what might be the problem? Thank you very much. Sherman Wong Sherman_Wong@baruch.cuny.edu |

| - may be a filesystem full (/var) - may be fs corrupted :key on maintenance mode, put the AIX Cd and reboot, acces volum group without mounting FS, an do "fsck -y" from the shell (after a mksysb of course) - may be you start to think to buy a new RS/6000 Sherman Wong wrote: > My department is using an 8-year-old RS/6000 workstation running AIX 4.3 > to post web-related files.
