What is required to upgrade from 5.2 to 5.3? Does this require special
media from IBM?

You can download the ML update from IBM's fix site if you don't have to
have physical media:

IBM doesn't have the major level updates available for download... you
have all updates within the 5.2 level, or 5.3 level, but nothing to go
from 5.2 to 5.3... You must get the media from IBM.
