| Hi there, may be a stupid question but sometime's You have no ideas at all. The problem is that we plan to upgrade a 6H1 from one to two proc's. Got a new processor board. OS is still 4.3.3. The downtime should be as short as possible. As far as I know the OS won't boot after the upgrade because of the uniprocessor kernel installed. On the other hand, I know no way to install a multiprocessor kernel prior to the upgrade. The only way I worked out for doing the upgrade is to mksysb the machine and resore it afterwards. Does anyone know a way of more elegance? Patrick |

Performance differences with single cpu can be neglected. Anyway this is a rather simple task with AIX, you just need to change two links from unix to unix_mp before exchanging the board: # ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp /unix # ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp /usr/lib/boot/unix # bosboot -ad /dev/ipldevice # shutdown -r HTH, Andreas |

You will just need to install bos.mp either before or after the upgrade, then you need to link /unix to usr/lib/boot/unix_mp, run bosboot, reboot and you should be using both processors. Steve |

You can verify this by looking at the links Andeas gave, they should already point to the mp kernel. Regards, Ron. |

| Hi there, thanks for the help. You are right, the mp kernel is already linked. But, once I tried to restore the system from a mksysb tape to a mp machine and that didn't work. Using the CD was successful. I thougt that was because of the wrong kernel in the boot session of the tape. Restoring to a uniprocessor machine worked directly from tape ?!? OK, we will install the board and see what happens ;-) Patrick Ron Visser wrote: > "Andreas Schulze" <b79xan@gmx.de> wrote in message news:<bunsn2$9ml9@news-1.bank.dresdner.net>... > >>"Patrick" <rhodan_nospam_5625@freenet.de> schrieb im Newsbeitrag >>news:bumrc1$v0f$1@online.de... >> >>>Hi there, >>> >>>may be a stupid question but sometime's You have no ideas at all. >>> >>>The problem is that we plan to upgrade a 6H1 from one to two proc's.
