Default Where to hard-set options for lp printer cpi?

Does anyone know where to set options for the characters per inch when
setting up a printer in AIX 5.1 using SystemV print subsystem?

Tried the lpadmin "-o cpi=xx" option but the printer still prints only with
what is set on the physical printer's control panel. It seems to be
ignoring the -o options. Do I need to mess with the
/etc/lp/interfaces/printername file? Or should the lpadmin -o options be
passed to this file when run by the lp scheduler?

Somebody must be using this subsystem with AIX as it is installed as the
non-default subsystem on OS 5L installs.
