| I just joined this list and would like to thank all people who are activelly developing this wonderul operating system. I am not exactly a newbie but I am very very rusty. I was able to install the base OpenBSD 3.4, X and downloaded source and package trees. Base system and X work fine. Now I am looking forward to install GNOME2.4, its applets and OpenOffice. Here is the hard drive breakdown: / 60MB /swap 400MB /var 60MB /temp 80MB /usr 1600MB /home 1600MB I am not very versed in "./config" "make" "make install" and "make clean" but if it does not give me error messages I can pass it. The problem starts when I try to start the whole thing. If it is enough of my old school to understand compiling principles, it is very difficult to learn scripting and user managemet. When I was studying programming Eniac was still around.... Here an old bag is asking for help. All I want is a concise direction like "1. do this..." "2. do that..." and so on. Considering that I dedicated the whole drive wholly for this operating system and the computer is fairly new I think it is possible to develop this kind of list. Trust me, I tried to lurk in user groups, visited different developers sites, asked questions on forums and so far I am still gathering bits and pieces. Can anyone or all of you tech-lords somehow come down on earth and help compiling this list "WHAT TO DO" for mere mortals? Literally, without much explanations just list the commands to load the system, blindly download source and/or ports trees, compile the packages, edit scripts for most generic setup, say two users. After it works those who are behind will leasurly study new domain commands in their new WORKING system! Please help me to compile the list of what to do in this form: 1. Dedicate a separate hard drive for OpenBSD (use removable tray caddy). 2. Insert boot CD and restart computer. 3. Select (I)nstall. 4. Prepare hard drive: a) at prompt > enter p m<<enter>> - see existin partitions b) d g<<enter>> - delete partition g c) d h<<enter>> - delete partition h ....... n) delete all partitions except the partition "c" o) a a<<enter>> - add 80MB / partition p) a b<<enter>> - add (RAMmemory)x2 /swap partition q) a d<<enter>> - add 60MB /var partition r) a e<<enter>> - add 100MB /temp partition s) a g<<enter>> - add 40% HD(2GB min) /usr partition t) a h<<enter>> - add leftovers of hard drive /home partition u) q<<enter>> - write partition to hard drive ....and so on... I would like to contribute and maintain this "newbie" directions. If anyone who knows this stuff can mail to me little bits and pieces I would be honored to help the free community. Sincerely, Alex... (bokakob.at.yahoo.com) (alkats.at.hotmail.com) |
