for xclock, this is probably caused by the fontconfig update. re-run
fc-cache. (ie fc-cache /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts as root; if you've fonts
installed in /usr/local/lib/X11/fonts repeat for this directory).

fvwm doesn't use fontconfig, thus I'm a bit surprised that it takes so
long to start.
