to translate what tedu is saying.. into a simpler form

sure, let's say we add -m

then let's say someone writes a script that uses -m

then they want that script to be portable, and then have to convince
other projects to do that

then some project adds a -g option

then some project adds a -p option

and it gets out of control, over time. it just plain becomes
stupidly silly, wasting bytes and everyone's time

suddenly a person reading a script sees an option they have not
seen before

this api bloat burns people out, and then it is not unix anymore.
