Default Bad looking fonts in Firefox.

Hello,

What can be done so that truetype fonts in Firefox (with xft support)
will look better? I enabled Freetype2 in unix.js:

pref("font.FreeType2.enable", true);

and turned anti-aliasing on, but no matter what I do, the same font
which in Windows' Firefox looks perfect - almost unreadable in
Linux's Firefox.

Here are some screenshots for example (using Microsoft Sans Serif):

Linux, anti-aliased: -- tinyurl.com/ysxza
Linux, non-anti-aliased -- tinyurl.com/39e7o
Windows -- tinyurl.com/2n9bc

What should be done in order to get the same fonts' quality
as in Windows' screenshot?

ddtl.

Did you get the build with XFT and GTK2?
It looks alot better - I get perfect fonts with it. The default one looks
like shit.

Yep, I did - at least that is what package's info says:

"This package has GTK2 support and XFT support."

ftp://ftp.linuxpackages.net/pub/Slac...-i686-1jim.tgz

Hi,

I wasn't too happy with fonts apperance in Mozilla at first, so loaded
up MS TrueType fonts and also compiled Mozilla myself after reading
these articles:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=6854
http://brendan.sdf-eu.org/articles/a...sing_slack.php

Later I installed Firefox, and am happy with font display.
Here's a screenshot of the same webpage you showed, except my resolution
is 1024 x 768 - http://tinyurl.com/37fn9

Hm - strange.
The one I got from mozilla.org has perfect fonts - maybe try it and see if
it's better?
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...tk2+xft.tar.gz

Note: If you want to open multiple instances, you need a script to start
it. If you want, I can post mine.

I got it - the problem was freetype2: I recompiled it with bytecode
interpriter enabled, and it solved the problem: now fonts in Firefox
look exactly the same as they are under Windows.

Though I wonder why other applications didn't have the problem,
even when bytecode interpriter wasn't enabled...

Also, one day i will have to figure out how to uninstall freetype2,
as i installed from source (2.1.8), without using installpkg.

If you still have the source (or rather, makefile) lying around, I think
make uninstall will do the trick.

If not, I'm not sure.

For future reference, you might want to look into checkinstall - it allows
you to /easily/ build a package from source.

Hmm...I just posted a comment on how fonts in X usually are a bit of a
tussle. This is a new one for me and some time back I did a page to help
others on Linux X Fonts (out of date now).

Well another tip goes into the bit bucket.

Here are some approaches to that...

Step 0 execute locate -u (I'd suggest unmounting remote file systems,
IOW only build a database for your Linux stuff)

1) Get package you installed and untar/zip into directory
a) Do ./configure and ./make
2) Get Slack package - untar/zip into directory
a) Do ./configure and ./make

Now you should have the list in those directories. If you are
really lucky there will be a uninstall option. Step a) may not be needed.

Now you have all the information you need to track them down and delete
them. Usually you can make sense from the install section. If not track
them all down with the aid of locate.

It's a little tedious but with a small package not a big hassle.

If you still have the build directory, run checkinstall from it. It will
create and install a package of the same freetype2 build you just
installed. You can then just removepkg it.
