What did you always use?

Use vi ;-)

I tried xorgsetup and it produced a messed up xorg.conf.
There's a xorgconf, too, I didn't try that.

I have always been able to use xfree86setup and it worked fine. So
naturally I tried xorgsetup and got the same result you did. I used
my old conf file and it is fine. Should X -configure work with
xorg. I tried it and got the same error that xorgsetup did. Must
be some problems with their setup tools in xorg.

Just copy your old /etc/X11/XF86Config file from 9.1 into 10.0 as
/etc/X11/xorg.conf. Mine works perfect. Naturally, back up xorg.conf,
first.

xorgconfig seems to be working properly.

I've just now installed 10.0 on a freshly formatted partition,
took all the defaults, and when I felt like going to X, (i.e.
had all the stuff configured that a console is better for
anyway), I typed

$ startx

and it came right up. I didn't have to configure _a thing_!

Try it, you might be pleasantly surprised.

I know I continue to be pleasantly surprised by Slack, and
am here to tell you that so far every problem I've had with
it has been from poking around where I don't know what I'm
doing.

Go figure. ;-)

Cheers!
Rich

Yes, I was surprised by this.

Some people would see this as a good thing, but there are two sides to the
coin. The pro side is X is automatically configured for you. The con side
is the X defaults may not be what you want. Pro: if you were going to
manually configure in the first place, it should be no problem to configure
in the second place. Con: assumes you know how to configure X. Pro.... no
wait, that's a con.... ummmm... Oh screw it! Copy yer old config file into
10's X11 directory!

I didn't have to even do that - all the defaults are an ordinary install.
What I _did_ have to do is copy those lines about the 5 buttons and emulate
z axis or whatever they are. Didin't they fix that? If so, how do I activate
the fix? Is there someplace where I should put "imps2?"

Thanks,
Rich

Can't say, Rich. I eschew scroll mice and their ilk in favor of old
3-button rats. But, as you point out, just copy over whatever worked for
you before, be it a few lines or the whole file. In my case the defaults
for 10 were not viable because I'm a geezer and I wanted 800x600 only, with
no virtual desktop, which the xorg defaults don't deliver. But, I still
have to do a little tweaking, as xorg now provides 32bit depth, which my old
script does not. .
