| Hi, i have installed and deinstalled in various ways kde 3.1.3 3.1.4 xfree new packages with freetype and fontconfig. Now kde 3.1.4 crashes often konq and does not recognize gkrellm in save session after logout. The fonts in konq are somewhat not AA or it uses ugly fonts from website(www.spiegel.de now looks good again with 3.1.3...) I think 3.1.4 needs a recompile. Dont know what causes this ugly non anti aliasing fonts. That unstable konq window is not repairable?!? Kind Regards Markus p.s. all new packages except kde 3.1.3 and qt 3.1.2 and the font issue is acceptable. -- Dipl.-Math.oec.Univ. On this system I had to change them from "helvicta" to "bitstream vera sans" because all of a sudden "helvicta" is no longer AA. This can easily be done through the KDE control centre Richard |

| There must be two problems with the same symptoms, then, because I replaced xfree86 as Markus suggested and the fonts worked again. I'm not running KDE at all. On Sat, 27 Sep 2003 05:40:02 +0000, Wild Wizard wrote: > nope the problem is in ~/.kde somewhere -- .. |

Hi Vigil, after that, the next morning booting time. With those old xfree packages and kde 3.1.3 the fatter bold vera fonts are again in place. I searched for freetype fontconfig and so on. nothing. On mailinglist archives: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?w=2&r=1&s=font+kde&q=t there are post discribing similar probs... Only if konq 3.1.4 remains unstable i switch to 3.1.3 again after trying it yesterday and now Markus |

I had some similar problems with fonts after this upgrade. Actually I didn't upgrade the xfree86 packages, but I did install the new elflibs package, which includes among other things freetype (which is also in the xfree86 packages). Replacing the new upgraded freetype libraries with the older version fixed the font problems, even in KDE 3.1.4. I think the reason for this is that in order to get the best quality rendering from freetype (which xft/fontconfig uses) you have to set some compile-time options in the freetype source to enable proper hinting support. The freetype project is not allowed to distribute packages with this enabled because of some legal issues, and if you don't have it set you either have to disable hinting or use freetype's "auto-hinting", neither of which looks as good as proper hinting support. Most distributions, though, including slackware in the past, ship binaries with hinting enabled. It looks like in the latest upgrade to freetype in the new xfree86 packages this option wasn't enabled. -- Not to have been a dupe, that will have been my best possesion, my best deed, to have been a dupe, wishing I wasn't, thinking I wasn't, knowing I was, not being a dupe of not being a dupe. --Samuel Beckett, The Unnamable |

So I don't know if it is necessary to change anything any more. It doesn't hurt to check, though. -- jamess Slackware Linux... The choice of professionals. |
