Default Display problem

A friend of mine talked me into taking Slackware 9.1 for a test Drive
I normally run Mandrake 10.1 with no problems to speak of.
I have a HP Pavilion 520n
512 meg RAM
On board Video (intel 810 chipset)

The install went quite well. I chose to install "ALL"
LILO starts great on boot and Linux boots to the command prompt.
I chose to install KDE and GNOME
From the command prompt I type "startx"
It tries to start but all at once the display goes bizerk!!
Looks like someone took 20 different colors and sprayed the screen with
a spray gun.

Mandrake seem to handle my display fine.
I did have a problem however trying to install FC3 and Suse 9.2
I installed Susi 9.1 no problem.
Does anyone have any theories what might be going on here?

TIA

Try importing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or xfree86) file of mandrake into
Slackware. You can also try to configure your X server directly. xorgcfg

Did you check the /var/log/ for the x log. Not running 10, using 9.x,
however, I assume the logs are still there and should provide some indication
or at least a starting point.

And is there a reason for using 9.1? We are up to 10.1 now. My 9.1 disks
were downloaded back in October 2003.

Yes - you haven't configured X properly, I guess.

Have a look here for some guidance - the whole book is useful :-)

You can go into a terminal and su to root.
Then do:
lspci
This gives you a list of pci devices so you will be able to enter the right data
in the next thing you can do.
Then do:
xf86config
This lets you set-up and write a new file for Xwindows so you can get startx to
work.
I have done this but had to redo it a few times till I got it right.

URL is incorrect.

http:/slackbook.lizella.net/chapter6.html

Previously the slackbook was hosted on my home adsl connection and the
above link will still show you a dated version of the site, but that
won't last.

Horrors!! Apologies all round for this. As you see I have it right in
my sig.

The reason for this is that I actually use the revised Slackbook as my
homepage for Firefox, and had the old URL there and pasted it from there.
All rectified now.

John, I have never used Slackware before only Mandrake. Mandrake, as
much as I like it for a Home PC Desktop isn't without it's "glitches".

I want to start building servers for my customers and although I have
been using Linux for about 2 years still consider myself a newbie.

I cannot use Linux for work because of some proprietary software I run
that requires the Windows OS.

I found Slackware a breeze to install, but would like to be able to use
the GIU if I can.
