Franz,

I installed gutenprint and upgraded cups to 1.2.4. That really broke
things. I can no longer see the PrintPro server using /usr/sbin/printers,
and still cannot print on both sides of the paper.

Roel,

I was not able to access a server to get 1.2.8, but I did get 1.2.4 from
Slackware testing. It has not solved the problem.

Thanks,

Ric

Kees,

That's what's so frustrating: CUPS drivers (the ESW PrintPro) sees the
duplexer; loptions shows it, too. But, it's no longer responding to it.

I guess I'll move this thread to one of the CUPS fora and see if I can get
a solution there.

Thanks,

Rich

I'm sorry for that, here I print to a whole family of HP printers (no LJ5
though, but one 5100...) duplex and all. It is slamd64, with
cups-1.1.23-x86_64-2 and gutenprint-5.0.0-x86_64-1.

Oh, I just saw that maybe you are not using a postscript printer, ours are
all postscript... Should've asked first.

Just to check, I installed the LJ 5 driver on the 5100 printer, and it
prints duplex nicely.

Reading your post again, I find I have no /usr/sbin/printers, which makes
me think of the PrintPro, which I do not use. Maybe there is a mismatch
between the PrintPro and the new cups? Maybe you should try to remove
or upgrade the PrintPro?

Sorry, just guessing atm...

Good luck
Franz

Franz,

I have the postscript module in both the LJ5 and the 2500C. Regardless,
non-PS output is filtered through either gs or gutenprint (when installed)
first.

No doubt. It's printed duplex nicely here for more than 8 years. I need to
find out why it stopped.

Gutenprint does only black-and-white with the ColorPro 2500C. That's why I
bought the PrintPro drivers years ago. Same printers, same drivers. If they
worked then they should still be working now.

And I think that I figured out why; I'll know for certain tomorrow morning
when I call Easy Software for a PrintPro upgrade. After all these years
running a 2.4.x kernel, I moved to 2.6.19.2 when I upgraded the distribution
to -11.0.

I went to my original /opt/printpro-4.4/ directory and saw that the
drivers were last upgraded in 2003, and the file name includes '2.4-linux.'
D'oh!

Seems reasonable to me that the change in kernel series is what stopped
the duplex printing from working.
