| Ok, I get the newest FGLRX driver for x86 from ATI, run it with --buildpkg Slackware/All and then it makes the tgz files as intended. So far so good. Next I install the tgz files and that seems to go ok except I get a single error after executing install script for fglrx-x710-8.38.6-x86-1. The error is: WARNING: /dev/shm is not mounted, see the file /usr/share/doc/ fglrx/articles/devshm.html. So I look at that file, and do what it says, so that's cool. Then I do the standard aticonfig --initial, and I get the following dump: root@DARTHTATER:~# aticonfig --initial Uninitialised file found, configuring. Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.original-2 *** glibc detected *** aticonfig: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0xbff2d751 *** ======= Backtrace: ========= /lib/libc.so.6(cfree+0x1b9)[0xb7d17219] aticonfig[0x8051ce7] aticonfig[0x8052065] aticonfig[0x8055a48] aticonfig[0x804985e] aticonfig[0x80496cb] /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xd8)[0xb7cc1df8] aticonfig[0x8049601] ======= Memory map: ======== 08048000-0806a000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12551609 /usr/bin/aticonfig 0806a000-0806d000 rw-p 00021000 08:02 12551609 /usr/bin/aticonfig 0806d000-0808e000 rw-p 0806d000 00:00 0 [heap] b7c85000-b7c86000 rw-p b7c85000 00:00 0 b7c86000-b7c8a000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12486170 /usr/lib/libXdmcp.so.6.0.0 b7c8a000-b7c8b000 rw-p 00003000 08:02 12486170 /usr/lib/libXdmcp.so.6.0.0 b7c8b000-b7c8c000 rw-p b7c8b000 00:00 0 b7c8c000-b7c8e000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 24674375 /lib/libdl-2.5.so b7c8e000-b7c90000 rw-p 00001000 08:02 24674375 /lib/libdl-2.5.so b7c90000-b7ca6000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12486317 /usr/lib/libxcb.so.1.0.0 b7ca6000-b7ca7000 rw-p 00016000 08:02 12486317 /usr/lib/libxcb.so.1.0.0 b7ca7000-b7ca8000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12486325 /usr/lib/libxcb- xlib.so.0.0.0 b7ca8000-b7ca9000 rw-p 00000000 08:02 12486325 /usr/lib/libxcb- xlib.so.0.0.0 b7ca9000-b7cab000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12486138 /usr/lib/libXau.so.6.0.0 b7cab000-b7cac000 rw-p 00001000 08:02 12486138 /usr/lib/libXau.so.6.0.0 b7cac000-b7de8000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 24674372 /lib/libc-2.5.so b7de8000-b7de9000 r--p 0013c000 08:02 24674372 /lib/libc-2.5.so b7de9000-b7deb000 rw-p 0013d000 08:02 24674372 /lib/libc-2.5.so b7deb000-b7dee000 rw-p b7deb000 00:00 0 b7dee000-b7e13000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 24674376 /lib/libm-2.5.so b7e13000-b7e15000 rw-p 00024000 08:02 24674376 /lib/libm-2.5.so b7e15000-b7e16000 rw-p b7e15000 00:00 0 b7e16000-b7efa000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12486125 /usr/lib/libX11.so.6.2.0 b7efa000-b7efe000 rw-p 000e3000 08:02 12486125 /usr/lib/libX11.so.6.2.0 b7efe000-b7f0b000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12486179 /usr/lib/libXext.so.6.4.0 b7f0b000-b7f0c000 rw-p 0000c000 08:02 12486179 /usr/lib/libXext.so.6.4.0 b7f0c000-b7f13000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12486234 /usr/lib/ libXrender.so.1.3.0 b7f13000-b7f14000 rw-p 00006000 08:02 12486234 /usr/lib/ libXrender.so.1.3.0 b7f14000-b7f19000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 12486231 /usr/lib/ libXrandr.so.2.1.0 b7f19000-b7f1a000 rw-p 00004000 08:02 12486231 /usr/lib/ libXrandr.so.2.1.0 b7f2a000-b7f34000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 19005533 /usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 b7f34000-b7f35000 rw-p 00009000 08:02 19005533 /usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 b7f35000-b7f37000 rw-p b7f35000 00:00 0 b7f37000-b7f52000 r-xp 00000000 08:02 24674414 /lib/ld-2.5.so b7f52000-b7f54000 rw-p 0001b000 08:02 24674414 /lib/ld-2.5.so bff19000-bff2e000 rw-p bff19000 00:00 0 [stack] ffffe000-fffff000 r-xp 00000000 00:00 0 [vdso] Aborted Ideas? | PH <this.is.fake@fake.org> wrote: > Ok, I get the newest FGLRX driver for x86 from ATI Is this really necessary? If you have a card based on a radeon series up to and including 9250 the opensource radeon driver, at least in my experience, works better than the binary fglrx driver. If you have a card up to but not including the X1* series you should be able to use the opensource r300 driver. I have no experience from that driver myself, but I think that it is included with Slackware 12 and at the time of this writing it is the top performer at http://www.free3d.org/ If you are unfortunate enough to have an X1* card you might have one more option if it is in a Dell Optiplex GX280. Throw out the card and use the built in intel based graphics on the motherboard. The VGA connector might be hidden behind some plastic, but that is easy to remove. In my experience the fglrx driver is a pita to configure and once configured it is not stable but will cause crashes. However, it was a long time since I played with the fglrx driver, maybe things have improved since then. Your post seems to indicate that they still are a pita to configure, lets hope that once configured they will be more stable than they used to be. regagards Henrik -- The address in the header is only to prevent spam. Actually, when playing DooM3 and Quake 4 it's not bad at all, but perhaps that's more due to id's coding. You're probably right but I just won't buy nVidia 'cos they destroyed 3dfx - matter of principle. That only leaves intel for me I guess. -- B.Hoffmann |

I've managed to get FGLRX installed and functional, but the errors I've previously encountered are still present. Which leads me to belive that there is something seriously wrong with Xorg + ATI's FGLRX + 3D applications. This is the fourth version of the drivers I've tried, the sixth linux distribution, and the third Xorg version. Pretty much, I agree with you: ATI + linux = fubar, but I can't just go get a new card. *sigh*. Thanks for all the support. I'll try again maybe after the next Xorg release or a new FGLRX version. And as one might expect, the problem does not occur within Microsoft Windows XP. (Dammit.) Peace! |

Well...if I stopped using certain computer gadgets because over the last 30 yrs of takeovers and buyouts, I woulda dumped computer tech ages ago. Am I ticked off about 1. 3DFX - yes 2. Apple moving to Intel - yes 3. IBM selling off thinkpads to Lenovo - yes ....I could go on and on... in the case of 3DFX, some of that tech in incorporated into the Nvidia cards. Besides, Glide still lives: There are glide to opengl wrappers - that's how I still play Wing Commander. |

Someday, when the World is at Peace and Humanity has reached Enlightenment, hardware companies will release specifications and/or reference driver code to allow proper Open Source implementation of their hardware. ....damn I woke up...coffee just kicked in... |
