| I'd like to know if there are different types of AVI file. I have many of them and I see that some of them could be played with xine or real play or whatelse, some of them have very poor quality and the rest are impossible to play, for example Avidemux can only open half of them whereas xine can play others....it seems that each file it's different from anyone else. I'm really confused, are there different types of compression or what? Thanks, Stefano |

The AVI format is really a blanket format - you choose the way you encode the video and audio under it. For example, you can have a DIVX avi, am indeo avi, a microsoft codec avi (worst codec ever, from like 1992) and so on. You don't even have to compress it - don't EVER do that ( huge file, amazingly jerky playback. As far as I know, this form is pretty much a bitmap sequence with optional sound) The audio can also be encoded in different ways (mp3, ulaw, truespeech, ETC...) |

If you need to, try getting mplayer also. It helps having more than one player, so long as you can keep mozilla from auto-opening one with the same player every time For example, I have Xine and MPlayer for videos. Sometimes mplayer works, sometimes not, etc. -- " ... and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights ... " --Declaration of Independance |

Yeah Both Video(could be MS MPEG4,DivX X.X, XviD, 3ivX an so on and so on...) and Audio(MS PCM, MP3... you know... a lot) MPlayer rulez forever i have ALL possible audio & video codecs in it (downloaded from mplayer's site) so i can play under Linux video files which couldn't be played under Windoze with inet connection to M$ site for update!!! |
