| I've been using KDE on my Slackware 10.0 install since the beginning, but now I'm trying to switch to Enlightenment. I've compiled and installed everything I need without a problem, but how do I start Enlightenment? Running xwmconfig only gives me the list of pre-installed window managers. I opened up startx but couldn't see where it specified KDE. Did I miss something? What do I need to do to switch my default window manager to one I manually install? Regards, David P. See the other files in that directory for an idea how to create the proper script. |

I believe these are what are used to put the wm on the kdm list. Maybe that'll help you. |

Look inside the enlightenment source distribution and read the file named INSTALL. It explains what to do. Basically you need to put in your home directory an executable file named .xinitrc (if you start X with the startx command) or .xsession (if you start X using a logon manager like XDM). The file should have something like "exec /usr/local/enlightenment/bin/enlightenment" as the last line. Use the actual path to your copy of enlightenment. .xinitrc should not start any other window managers. Slackware has several xinitrc files in /etc/X11/xinitrc/ to use as examples. -- The night is just the shadow of the Earth. |

KDE isn't a window manager. It is a GIDE (Graphical Integrated Desktop Environment). There's a world of difference between a GIDE and a window manager, starting with their size. The usual default install for KDE is hundreds of megabytes. You can get a workable window manager (like flwm) that is a few tens of kilobytes. GIDEs _use_ window managers; or are built on/around them. To run Linux with just a window manager, you have to know the shell. Enlightenment looks like a bloated window manager, something you'd use _with_ KDE/GNOME, rather than as a replacement for them. <snip> AC -- Ratpoison is the best graphical window manager I've ever used: http://www.nongnu.org/ratpoison/ ~ |
