My Rio Carbon shows up as a usb drive. I don't think IPODs can do this.

Does google not work for you? Look at the third hit for "ipod linux".
(Don't look at the second, which is about installing linux onto an
iPod.)

I have an ipod shuffle, it works great with this software:
http://gtkpod.sourceforge.net/
Originally wrote for the ipod, the newer version works with the shuffle
as well.

Some people don't use google, for reasons you wouldn't understand.

My 20GB Ipod works great under linux. I pulled it out of the box and
plugged it into my slackware laptop. It has never been exposed to a
Mac, Windows, or the software it came with in the box.

I strongly recommend gtkpod it works great.

Well my Ipod shows up as a harddrive at /mnt/ipod whether I plug it
into my USB2 port or into the firewire/IEEE-1394 port.

Although I tend to use the USB2 port as my laptop only has a 4-pin
ieee-1394 port and I need a 6-pin port to enable the battery
recharging. It recharges fine via the USB2 port.
