| I recently installed Slack 9.1, then was using KWord a lot for research papers. I needed to be able to open Word .docs and couldn't, and it was also crashing a lot so I used the pkgtool to install KOffice 1.3 and now have no problems; everything was working great after the new version and the Word filter. I then felt positive about upgrades and downloaded all of the KDE 3.2.2 tgz packages from linuxpackages.net, taking note that I needed to upgrade qt to at least 3.2.3, so I downloaded that .tgz as well. I then used pkgtool to remove the old ones and install the new ones. I have tried this in several differnt orders with no luck--that is, installing qt first then the kde libs and base and finally the rest of kde one time then in a different order another time after one way failed. I can't get into KDE. I get a white screen like it is about to go and then a small xwindow with a complaint about kdeinit, then a refernce to libkdeui.so.4 from the startkde script (if i recall the path was usr/local/bin). I'm several hundred miles from my linux machine for about a week, but would like to get a thread running so when I return I'll have some recommendations to try and can get any downloads I may need while I have access to a high speed connection (at home it's dial-up). I'm cunfused about whether I am having version conflicts or configuration conflicts. If there are some common upgrade considerations for something like KDE that aren't mentioned in general instructions that a linux newbie like myself generally run across, I would be glad to hear them. A simple list of how one might approach this upgrade would be greatly appreciated. Aaron |

The order cant effect the final result. But it seems like you not alone. The problem is being discussed with "pcxz" who build the packages. Keep an eye at this site, maybe they will come up with an solution before you get back. <URL: http://www.linuxpackages.net/pkg_details.php?id=2299> -- Thomas O. Thanks, but one issue is that my dial-up connection at home is 26400 due to crappy phone lines, so I'm downloading all the KDE, QT, XFree86 packages to take back with me. That leaves my question being whether or not I can use swaret to point to my cdrom drive or a disk partition rather than the web- based locations by editing a config file or something. I'm getting the QT 3.3.1 which KDE 3.2.2 seems to be compiled with so maybe that will help too, and I'll do the Xfree86 upgraded as well, as long as it won't affect GNOME and other desktops in a negative way. I recommend it FWIW. -- Regards garbage garbagedisposal@despammed.com |
