Default Mythtv on Slackware 10.2

I am in the process of getting mythtv running on my Slackware 10.2 box
(which runs a 2.6.16 kernel). I had a look into Slackware howtos available
in the net for this purpose, but they all seem to be a bit outdated - for
Slackware 9.1.

I surmise that things will be similar under 10.2, but I
would be grateful if members of this forum who have got mythtv running
under 10.2 could share their experiences. The only glitch I have found so
far is that I can't compile lirc-0.8 with my 2.6 kernel - there is an
issue with the i2c component.

I was going to write up a HOWTO for this, but I got distracted. I took
a week off work for my birthday over which I did the install, but due
to a problem with MythTV not being able to unmute my TV card, I spent
the whole week tracking down that issue rather then writing up the
HOWTO! Also, my girlfriend has just given birth to a baby boy, so we
have other time comsuming hobbies now :-S

I don't use lirc; I simply use a wireless keyboard. Its not ideal, but
it works fine for now. My plan is to get a "learning" remote, and
simply program the keyboard into that.

Other than that, pretty much everything works just as it should. From
the list of dependencies, I found I didn't need qt-devel and
freetype2-devel as they were included with Slack. I grabbed lame,
cdialog and XMLTV (get the perl XMLTV dependency packages included with
it too, its easier than installing them by hand). This being slack they
all compile and install with no problems. I would then grab TVTime and
install just to check your TV card as well; it will help confirm that
the crucial part of your setup is working. Then just grab all the
MythTV stuff. It takes a while to compile, but again I haven't had any
problems. The only things that don't work on my setup are MythBrowser,
which I can live without and mythfilldatabase; it doesn't seem to want
to run from myth, or from a cronjob, but simply stick it in a bash
script and run it as a cron job and it should be fine. Sorry this isn't
any more helpful but as I mention with a two week old baby in the
house, life is a bit chaotic at the moment. If you get stuck with
anything, please do let me know. I am by no means a MythTV expert, but
have been running it on various versions of Slack for about two years
now and once it is setup, it runs fantastically. Slack is of course and
excellent platform for MythTV.

Thanks for your feedback. I know what it is like living with a two week
old baby at home: Chances are that you are not getting much sleep :-)

Anyway, my setup seems to be working fine so far. I believe my TV capture
board (a Hauppauge PVR-150) to be working fine (which I will ascertain
once I get the cable to connect it to my satellite box). Is it at all
necessary to get some sort of remote control device, or can everything be
controlled from the keyboard attached to the computer running mythtv?

Sleep? What's that then? ;-) Actually he's getting better already.
Sometime we almost get five hours!

No, everything can easily be controlled from the keyboard. The only
reason for a remote is that its nicer to have that on the coffee table
than a keyboard as far as I can tell. It does wonders for the GAF/WAF
(Girlfriend/Wife Acceptance Factor). I've already got my girlfriend
hooked on Myth so she doesn't mind the keyboard now.

Don't get too cocky - babies have a way of reminding you who really is
the boss when you least expect it.

OK, I'll proceed without a remote control initially. Once I get things to
work I'll have another look into remote control support.

Have you been able to figure out who the father is?

cordially, as always,

congrats. and one bit of advice (I have a 15 month old...) you sleep
when they sleep. Otherwise you get no sleep. Especially if you end up
with a kid like my daughter - high energy. It's hard when your 9 month
old only sleeps 9 hours a day... and you need 9 hours yourself. Hard to
do much slacking on three hours of sleep 20 days in a row.

Hmm, not quite it seems. I am still having trouble getting
"mythfilldatabase" to run I get this message from cron;

Using a 1996 distro does have its drawbacks.

What? I can't believe this! You mean that after only one week trying to get a
software to work on Slack96, you turned your back on it to take care of a baby?

You're not a real Slacker!
