| First of all: This problem is definitely NOT caused by Slackware but I am posting to this group because in the past, every query I've made here, was always very helpful to me (ok, it sounds like flattery but it is true, besides flattery gets you everywhere???). I am using Slackware 9.0, and the problem I am having is that when I use a french keyboard (setup via the XF86Config file), in Openoffice I am able to get all accented letters except for the circumflex types (the ones with the little hat "^" over them). Basically the dead key which is used to get a circumflex char (the "[" key) is ignored by openoffice. Other dead keys work just fine. This occurs with OpenOffice version 1.0 through to the latest beta. Note though that this problem does not occur in any other program (like rxvt, nedit. mozilla) that I use. I definitley concluded that it IS an openoffice problem. I contacted www.openoffice.org about 9months ago (for vers 1.0.1) but still no reply - and no bug fix! The keyboard I am using is canadian french "ca" in XF86. There must be some slackware users in Quebec, Canada, that use openoffice...do you have the same problem? Have you solved it? Could you tell me how you did it? :-) The work arounds are ridiculous: - use "insert special character" - having a document with all circumflex chars open and cut / paste into new document. - use windows to create french lang. docs. (uuugh) - consider buying vmware to run (windows/wordperfect from linux (uuugh uuugh!) I can provide more info to help resolve this very frustrating problem. Thanks. |

Just a question (to show how little I know about kyeboards): why would you want dead keys enabled with a US english keyboard? You say they work in Kword etc, do you mean that you can actually get non-english chars using dead keys with english keyboard? If so I should maybe experiment along that path in getting my problem solved. I actually toyed with the idea of copying the "ca" keyboard layout to another file and changing the dead key assignement to see if OO can recognize them...but have no time now...maybe during the winter :-) If I learn anything about my keyboard problem will post here...it may also help you. Good luck... |

And yes, you can: à, á, ä, ã. With Slack - in OO - the accents don't work at all: quotes are impossible. OO on Suse and Gentoo did not have this problem, as far as I remember. And I know that the keyboard defs in Gentoo's XF86Config were no different from those in Slack. I googled in AOLS to no avail. |
