| I notice a lot of posters using cable. Now, I've considered it, I'm using satelite, Dish, and wonder how much, in a general amount, the cost you pay in your area. Here, It'd be close to $100 a month, maybe a bit more if I get HBO. The cable service we are forced to use here is Cable One. For DSL it is cheaper but the connection speed would be one fourth that of cable, then there is the extra cost of the ISP charging in increments as to the speed of the service. But you all knew that! Thanks in advance. -- |

As I'm a mile far from the DSL node I usually have an average of 5 to 7 Mb. No charge for content (that'd be a "no go" for me and many). There are of course, as you said, different additional services or extensions in TV channels, different ludicrous and inunderstandable grids of fares for phone and PPView nonsense which I'll let to the people half my age and younger The cable offers here are slower (and their bandwidth is even much more vulnerable to QoS and repartition) |

This for allegedly $45mo. But, the truth is, Comcast pulls a little extortion racket that says to get internet cable for $45, you must already subscribe to at least min cable tv service for $15 for a total of $60. If you don't want cable tv, Comcast will charge $60 for internet cable alone. Such a deal. nb |

But I can have 10 Mbit/s fiber, it'll cost me $600 to have it established and then $85 a month. -- Thomas O. This area is designed to become quite warm during normal operation. |

Cable is more like a pipe from the internet to your neighborhood - where everyone shares the same pipe. So until everyone starts using it, you're fine. I'm currently using a wireless cable solution. The local provider installs an antenna, and runs a coax down to a cable modem. Minimal setup, no annual contract, $35/month. Main limitation is line of sight to the transmitter. My service is 1.5mb - they have a 256kb line for $20/month. I have done some downloads where I've seen about 3mb actual throughput. |

Yeah I am aware of the more users of the Internet connections on Cable the less bandwidth. And I would rather go the wireless solution but all the major services are not yet available here, damnit. I just can't see the price for cable service, it is much too high for my retirement income. Is DSL 64kbs worth the $30? -- |
