| Just venting accumulated pressure. Since 12 installed itself(?!@) on mine box I had rather "interesting" few weeks. As I grew with this creature since last century/millenium I believed that it shown me _all_ tricks and no additional suprises in its sleeves. Wrong. But it is result of my own making. For years I had well behaving distro which have been doing its job(s) in proper respectful silence. 'Mea culpa' I decided to teach it to talk. It meant to join few user groups and fight configurations till it learned and started talking back. So now I have talking and singing radio stations from all over the globe. Some of them are even dancing in xine. Here comes the bad hickup, xine when closed takes with it the whole X-windows system and leaves me with "DOS" screen. _CLI_ to uneducated. When in CLI had to do some file transfers so invoked mc and chanced on mine mp3 directory. When hitting CR on a file it started singing like it should in CLI but no hint of any volume control. Some thing to learn later. With all those troubles I simply love this monster. Have fun Stanislaw Slack user from Ulladulla. |

Good to hear from the only Slackware user in Ulladulla again :-) Have you tried mplayer for all the singing and dancing? It certainly has none of the vagaries of the various gui players. A basic skin to start with, I would go for skin 'Blue': http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html#skins And then SMplayer (better then KMplayer), an advanced skin on top of that, which forfills about al my needs: http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/en/index.php Or Slackware packages for Mplayer with skin allreaddy buit-in, and SMplayer: http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_...layer&ver=12.0 And Mplayer codecs: http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_...ntial&ver=11.0 (Works on Slackware 12, and if not, just extract to the appropiate directory). Many people have reported that mplayer seems to run a lot better when compiled on the machine it's intended to run on. Both the codecs and the player are available from http://www.slackbuilds.org/repository/12.0/multimedia/, and the MPlayer SlackBuild installs the Blue skin. |

I had some problem with that buildscript (but might have been me running buildscripts for the first time): When building, at the end an error saying no skin available. Made fresh start, deleted stuff which was builded, added skin to suggested build directory: builded, installed, mplayer crash. Again fresh start, builded with no skin this time, installed package, and extracted skin manually to it's directory: no more problems. Maybe just me. Now it just works fine. Nice software. Most important is that it works, if problems, there are workarounds. >Both the codecs and the player are available from >http://www.slackbuilds.org/repository/12.0/multimedia/, and the MPlayer >SlackBuild installs the Blue skin. |

P.S. Make sure the skin is in the build directory, which for me resulted in mplayer crash, but used different kernel then, and might have made mistakes. http://slackbuilds.org/repository/12...media/MPlayer/ : "This script is written to install the default "Blue" theme for MPlayer, and it will print an error (but allow you to continue) if you don't have the theme tarball in the build directory". Will try it again exactly that way, if it works (without crash) this time, maybe mplayer will run even smoother as it allreaddy does. |

I can confirm that. But it still performed better than e.g. mpg321 - that one was stuttering, while mplayer played just fine with ~60% of CPU load (128kbps stereo MP3 on a P1@150MHz) - both built from source with the same optimalizations. Just watch out what you compile in - I forgot the Theora installed, compiled mplayer, removed Theora and then mplayer won't run complaining libtheora is missing. I did rebuild mplayer withh the slackbuild, not that crash anymore that I previously had, seems to run better too. So I guess I made mistake before... There's a package SMPlayer now (maybe allready for some time, but I didn't notice) for Slack 12.0 at http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_...layer&ver=12.0 (SMPlayer = MPlayer front-end). It has a much improved GUI and a few more languages, and some other skins. |
