| Like the heading says, way OT. My reason: desperation. I unpacked the eclipse SDK v2.1.1 for gtk. No prior releases on this system. When I run the eclipse binary I get the splash screen then the dialogs appear and it's up and running. Trouble is that there is no text anywhere. The drop-down menus are all blank (just a dot where a word should be). Even when I type the cursor shows up but no text!! Version info: $ ls /var/log/packages/gtk* /var/log/packages/gtk+-1.2.10-i386-2 /var/log/packages/gtk+-2.2.2 /var/log/packages/gtk-engines-0.12-i386-1 /var/log/packages/gtkhtml-1.0.2-i386-1 /var/log/packages/gtkmm-1.2.8-i386-1 $ echo $JAVA_HOME /opt/j2sdk1.4.1 I have messed around with window managers in the past - have ice now and very smug It's OT, but can any knowledgable slackers point me in the right direction here?? I want to learn to use eclipse but without text it's not intuitive - I'll mail the developers about that once it's working ;-) Cheers and sorry to clog up aols with java mumbo-jumbo! -- Ben Fitzgerald London, UK |

Unfortunately, the neurons on which those details were stored have been recycled Have you searched on the Eclipse mailing list and web archives (on eclipse.org)?. Glenn. -- Apologies. I posted my problem there too but no helpful responses Thanks for replying, though. Any more info on the fonts is greatly appreciated. e.g. is it and x config thing or a font package?? At that time I was running Slackware 3.3 and in the process of upgrading it to glibc2. > Thanks for replying, though. Running any TrueType fonts? XFontServer? How about the Java fonts? Are they setup correctly? Can you run any of the Java Demo programs ? At this point my bet would be to doublecheck fonts in the JDK install. Glenn. -- Apologies. Check the $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/fonts directory. Also see if Eclipse is logging any errors in eclipse/workspace/.metadata/.log I've noticed that I have true type fonts installed on my system - so if all else fails, install TTF's and try again. That's all I can think of. Sorry for not being able to be more helpfull. Glenn. -- Apologies. Sorry for not being able to be more > helpfull. Glenn, I'm very grateful for any help! Don't be sorry! I have spent a long time trying to get this going. I even used dropline-installer to upgrade to gnome2. Still I suffer the same problem with eclipse, but I now realise it's linked to the gtk. I even reinstalled X to clear out the fonts directories including TTF but it made no difference at all. It is a real messy situation and I think that time-wise I'm best to reinstall. I've wasted a lot of time fiddling when I could have been studying! Very frustrating stuff. I'll bump up to slack 9.0 and make sure I don't mess with anything unless I'm 100% crystal clear how to get back in 5 minutes with little fuss. Guess I just learnt that lesson the hard way... Thanks, Ben |
