When I respond to a multi-line post with just one or two lines Pan goes
into a race condition and for all intents and purposes locks up on me. I
think it's doing this because it's unable to launch the warning about
"most of the message is quoted text" or whatever it is. There are some
groups that this is the norm though and isn't considered rude, otherwise I
wouldn't do it.

So, if anyone has time to test this you can do so by posting something
like this: http://www.lipsum.com/ - the default 5 paragraphs is plenty -
to a test group then follow it up with a one or two line response. The
first message goes fine for me the second will not.

I did the test as requested and Pan hangs every time I try to send the
message. I have to go to a console and do "killall pan".

I've noticed this often before but hadn't identified the conditions.

I also have a problem doing an initial post if I don't intentionally wrap
the text using the little page-wrap icon on the icon bar of the
compose-message window.

Any fixes would be greatly appreciated. I like Pan, but I don't think I
can put up with this very often.

Then, it's even worse here, it freezes while pushing the first message !

Thanks for confirming this. I've filed a bug report and hopefully the Pan
developers can figure out what's happening. This started a month or two ago
for me and Pan hasn't changed in that time so I believe that the problem is
with an updated library.

I hadn't noticed the problem with the wrapping but if my hypothesis that the
problem occurs when Pan tries to launch a warning dialog is correct then
this would make sense - I _think_ Pan warns when posting long lines, KNode
does.

Well, that's interesting - thanks for confirming the problem by the way. I
haven't had severe problems with the initial send but it does seem to use a
lot of CPU when sending. I've filed a bug report and hopefully the Pan
developers can figure out the problem. Personally, I like Pan a little
better than KNode.

Works fine for Pan 0.14.2 on Slackware 9.1.

I'm glad you filed a bug report. This is pretty much a showstopper for me.
Still, I keep coming back to Pan, because I just can't find another Linux
newsreader that I like.

I'm thinking increasingly that this is a Slackware-specific problem that
Pan is having. I tried Pan on Mepis and didn't have this problem. Also, I
put a post on linuxquestions.org Software forum, and no one who's not
using Slackware has reported this problem.

But what could the matter be? It's really irksome.

I still think it's something to do with libraries. I did the traceback and
runlog as requested on the pan bug reporting page and added them to the bug
so maybe they'll take a look at it.

I used Arch Linux for a while and had the same problems on it after some
updates - same with Slackware, worked fine and then *bam* something changed
and it wasn't Pan itself. I don't know how to figure it out using the
traceback and runlog but I'm hoping it helps the Pan developer(s).

I have a spare box or two so maybe I'll put straight Slackware 10 on and see
if that has problems - if I have time, maybe I can upgrade one thing at a
time and see if I can figure out in a brute force way what breaks it.

Someone on the Pan mailing list thinks that the problem shows up with
newer versions of gtk+. I think he's on to something, because after I
downgraded my gtk+ from 2.6.1 to 2.4.3, the problem goes away. A couple of
others have reported the same thing.

Now my question is this: is the problem with Pan, or with gtk+?
