| Hello ! I've got a problem with printing in Slack9. I'd like to run my DeskJet 710C on CUPS. - i installed whole distro (CD ISO1) - downloaded PPD file for my printer from linuxprinitg.org - i did everything what i've read on that website (copied PPD, foomatic-rip, even foomatic-gswrapper, did simlinks etc.) - then i set my HP on localhost:631 - when i tried to print a test page - nothing happend only this: ========== 710-11 Test Page root 15k aborted ========== - i tried to restart job and saw this ========== Error: client-error-not-possible ========== then looked into the logs and saw this: ========== sh: line1 ESP Ghostscript 7.05.6: Can't find initialization file gs_init.ps ========== but i have got this file (gs_init.ps) in /usr/share/ghostscript/7.05/lib directory i tried to compile from sources the ESPGS-7-05.6 after i removed package. maybe this harmed my system. i tried to "make uninstall" it but i couldn't. finally i installed again packages and nothing happed again the "gs -h" command shows this: =========== Search path: . : NONE/share/ghostscript/7.05/lib : NONE/share/ghostscript/fonts : NONE/share/fonts/default/ghostscript : NONE/share/fonts/default/Type1 : NONE/share/fonts/default/TrueType : /usr/lib/DPS/outline/base : /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 : /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType For more information, see NONE/share/ghostscript/7.05/doc/Use.htm. =========== i tried to do "export GS_LIB=/usr/share/ghostscript/7.05/lib" but my printer still isn't working PLEASE HELP - ANYBODY i've read many manuals on the web, but nothing helped me. heh... Best regards Janusz |

The 710 uses a now-defunct protocol for data called PPA. Basically the data path is: Postscript --(gs)--> PPM --(pnm2ppa)--> PPA --> /dev/lp Get pnm2ppa here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pnm2ppa I don't know that this'll help with the gs problem, tho. -Beej |

It probably includes instructions that say do something like this to build them: ./configure make su make install But I don't remember the detail. It might be different. There are also basic install and use instructions for it in there as well. I have a 710 working, but I don't use CUPS because at the time it said it didn't support it. I just use lpd, but setting that up is more than I can detail right now. -Beej |

(see next comments) > Search path: > . : NONE/share/ghostscript/7.05/lib : NONE/share/ghostscript/fonts : okay, this is exactly what i got the first time that i compiled ghostscript. for some reason the configure script isn't doing what it's supposed to do. pay attention to the path: NONE/blah/blah/... notice the "NONE" ? [0] doesn't this look like a non existing path ? i thought so. now, you may have re-installed the ghostscript package, but your previously compiled ghostscript binary is still sitting in /usr/local/bin, which will be executed before /usr/bin, where your package ghostscript binary sits. now it's up to you, either remove the one you compiled, and use the slackwarepackage, but you'll need to figure out what other packages it needs (this is why i compiled my own, it was linked against alot of things i did not want to install) or, you can remove the package, and recompile from source, this tiome, giving the configure script the correct parameters, and feeding it a reasonable value for "datadir" that should fix the "NONE" problem give it a go, and your printer should start to spit out your prints [0] have a look in your ghostscript source dir now, you'll notice that there is a directory called "NONE" which holds part of the installation Jurgen. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/QDf11ucXIiwNwbURArmgAKCvGir8KBdOnEXvjWP1PZ6QIaffbA CgpMF2 lpGPNr+tFuc7cBu3MS+761g= =DmDX -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

Everything was fine but when i tried to print test page a gs_init.ps error occured again i think the one and only problem to solve now is the gs_init.ps error. I am closer now I'd like to configure my printer on CUPS and APSFILTER. I am a newbie that's why I'd like to learn how to do it THANKS A LOT for helping me !!! I appreciate this ! See ya |

YES, exactly, i noticed this THING and i even tries to correct this thing by: "export GS_LIB=/usr/share/ghostscript/7.05/lib" then "gs -h" showed me the search path including this from GS_LIB, but it didn't help nothing happened > now, you may have re-installed the ghostscript package, but your > previously compiled ghostscript binary is still sitting in > /usr/local/bin, which will be executed before /usr/bin, where your > package ghostscript binary sits. oh, than i have to check it... > now it's up to you, either remove the one you compiled, and use the > slackwarepackage, but you'll need to figure out what other packages > it needs (this is why i compiled my own, it was linked against alot > of things i did not want to install) i did a full install of slack > or, you can remove the package, and recompile from source, this > tiome, giving the configure script the correct parameters, and > feeding it a reasonable value for "datadir" Yes, i Did this i used this command: "./configure --prefix=/usr" - and the ghostscript directory showed like from package but when i tried "gs -h" there was "path: NONE/blah/blah/..." again i tried even "./configure --prefix=/usr --with-fontpath=/usr/ghostscript/fonts" - cause i had this directory when i installed the package, but it didn't fix the problem. > give it a go, and your printer should start to spit out your prints i will fight for my right tooooooo priiiiiiiinnnteerrrr > [0] have a look in your ghostscript source dir now, > you'll notice that there is a directory called "NONE" which holds > part of the installation yeah i even tried to rename it to USR Okey, now i am going to erase all the GS files :-E, pray for my Slack I will post soon THANKS for help !!!!!!
